If you couldn't figure out the story by ... y'know, *playing it*, that's also on you, because it was there really clearly every time you talked to the contacts...
For my two cents, I only reach for the machinegun in two situations; if I screw up and find myself facing a large group of enemies, or for playing Survival Mode.
Ordinarily I play like a sniper. I position myself high up and pick off my targets one by one, they're usually well aware that I'm picking them off but unaware where the shots are coming from. So far I've been able to take that approach into every mission in the game, it worked particularly well and was particularly fun around Lorino harbour.
My approach as well. Give me an elevated position with a good field of view, a pile of ammo and a Mosin and I can clear out half the level without moving an inch.
Normally I'll only move in on foot once the area has been scoured clean. I don't bother with a machinegun outside of Survival mode, normally I go for a Trench Gun for room clearance and an HDM or Luger for picking off stragglers, chosen depending on the availability of supressed ammo.
You don't need to know the prior game stories to play this one. Heck, they are out of order anyway...Sniper 2 comes after this one chronologically.
As to the game play, this is a game in which they give you many ways to accomplish the mission. They also give you many different points to use, each of which covers about 30-40% of the map. It perfectly allows you to spend hours scanning and marking targets. Then, if you use distracting noise to your advantage, you can nearly take out half of the threat on the whole map before moving on, and definitely from the immediate area you are going through.
I literally kill 95% of the enemy with the sniper rifle. If you are not a patient person and choosing not to use the sniping, well that's on you. Perhaps sniper type games are not for you.
If you want a storyheavy game go play Witcher 3, Pillars Of Eternity, Bioshock series, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Mask of The Betrayer, Planscape Torment, Fallout new Vegas, etc..
Sniper Elite is more about the enjoyment of shooting enemies in the balls and playing stealthy.
