I mean, if you guys want more games in the franchise that change things up radically like Yumia, you need to show them your support. Make it a million seller. I don't think people realize how expensive RPGs are to make.
Well - The thing is...
I own all Atelier games on Steam. Nevertheless I still downloaded all "alternate" versions.
The reason is very simple. If I buy a game I want to own it in a sense that I can install and play the game without a required Internet connection, or a mandatory client. Once I bought a game I do not want another party tell me when and how I play what I have bought.
That's the reason when I see Denuvo in a game, I almost certainly not going to buy it. Denuvo is the worst anti-consumer software in the game universe as far as I am concerned. I will never ever feel comfortable wit any form of DRM, because they can rip the stuff you bought out of your hands for any reason they come up with (or no reason at all but just for giggles), at any time they like. It's like having the sword of Damocles is hanging above your games, ready to strike at any time. And you never know how, when or why...
That's the reason I would LOVE to see all Atelier games on GOG. Call me crazy (and I probably am completely), but I would buy all Atelier games a second time (not all at once of course, even craziness goes only so far), just to get some "official" off-line installers from the GOG website.
Yeah - Call me crazy, but I like to keep the stuff I payed money for...
And while Denuvo is bad, there have been plenty of other DRM mechanisms out there that were far more restrictive, like SecuROM, which required you to re-authenticate games every 10 days, or Johren's DRM, which will only allow you to activate a game three times ever before it's permanently disabled.
Well - I am on Steam since a Steam account was needed to install Half-Life 2. That was more than 21 years ago. Of course I have purchased some games during that time, but I never felt comfortable with the mandatory Steam client. That's the reason I had more Disk Based games than Steam games from the start. Of course during that time I learned to hate DRM protection, and I now have several disk based games that are completely unplayable thanks to that bloody DRM.
Of course GOG did not even exist in that time, so there was not much of a alternative. Or actually - None at all.
Once it was possible to buy my games on GOG, I prioritise to buy my games there, because of the DRM-Free, Client-free, off-line stand alone installers for every game I bought over there. Sometimes, however, you don't have much of a choice. If you really like a game and want to play it badly, you have to live with the fact that you have no choice than using a less desirable store front, and even that bloody Denuvo.
In general I make sure the games I buy on Steam, are nowhere else available. I don't buy games on the Epic store platform by the way, because I hate the guts of those guy's for starting that console-war-like exclusivity game hostage BS. They can burn in hell as far as I am concerned. Anyway - Even if I buy my games on Steam, I make sure there is a "alternative" available, just to make sure my investment is safe.
Because, I always pay for my games (yes - that's another level of craziness I guess), but at the other hand I will make sure they are not going to be ripped out of my hands sometime in the future. With Devuvo you know that will happen. It's not a question of IF but a question of WHEN. So - While I have games that have Denuvo, I won't deny it, I most times just don't buy games that are infected with the Denuvo kill switch. Some times a publisher/developer get smart and removes Denuvo from a game, and that is the moment I buy the game that I have been putting off before.
A small remark on the Steam DRM. It's no secret that Steam DRM is relatively easy to circumvent for games like the Atelier series. Some games have no Steam DRM at all, and can simply be started from their .exe files. So I do not consider Steam too harmful. But even then, in most cases I make sure there is a "alternative" available before buying a game.
So there it is. Most of my games on Steam are bought in a time that there was no alternative. When games became available on the GOG storefront, I shifted my buy priority immediately to there. I really, really want to see the Atelier games on the GOG store front, and I would gladly re-buy all those Atelier games over there. That would not take them out of my Steam catalogue of course, but I would feel a lot safer.
If you think that I am still hypocritical after this explanation, feel free to do so. I think I have done my work to avoid DRM as much as is humanly possible. And I still hate DRM like Denuvo, but I sometimes have not much of a choice because I really want to play that game (Persona 5 Royal for instance). I still feel bad about it though, and I hope the publisher/developer will remove that garbage from their game in the future.
Flat earth is also the way you live or just the moon conspiracy is your bread and butter?
Denuvo is terrible for preservation though. It hurts the non-pirates above all else. The pirates can emulate it on another console, like the Switch. They'll get to play it regardless. And we KNOW they will. So your idea doesn't hold water, in ANY form. It will be cracked probably on Day one.
Again, doesn't matter because those aren't sales regardless of what they do.
It's more about honor for me anyway. It shows them we care. Like GoG, right? You can easily do the same with them, but there are many paying customers.
The quality difference between Ryza 2/3 and Yumia is staggering, so I'm hoping for a quality PC release, no pun intended.
How does that make any sense lol,
MH Rise had Denuvo and was STILL cracked, along with a few others.
The only thing you're wishing is for people that actually pay for the game to suffer genius.
You need to go talk to someone about your issues.
Rise came out in 2021. This is 2025, where things are very different. I don't think anything Denovo has gotten cracked in like almost two years at this point.
