Laptop touchpad: I felt like it was difficult to shoot and move the cursor at the same time. Plus moving it too far could take two finger strokes
Steam controller as a twin stick: Aiming with the right stick (a touchpad) always felt so imprecise, as you dont have an actual stick there to be able to feel which direction you're pointing in
Steam controller with the right touchpad as a 1:1 touch screen: This was OK, but still, aiming at specific points could sometimes take a few seconds
Mouse and keyboard: Winner
To me, there's definitely something positive about moving the character/shooting with a stick over a steam controller touchpad, because you can actually feel which direction you're pointing with a stick, but not with a touchpad. It's definitely a distinction that needs to be made when you're talking about this.
Maybe if i had a controller with 2 sticks i'd consider that the best, but I dont.
controller is just for casual play. Whenever you want to go professional you need Keyboard+Mouse no matter what.
Using my 360 controller, I could easily move in one direction, and shoot in another at the same time.
That's why there's a move stick and an aim stick.
Controllers are good for consistently hitting, but KB + M is better for precise aiming + camera control.
I don't see the aim assist as an issue. Without it, it's hard to hit with the controller reliably, as there is no crosshair. I'd compare it to like, Doom targeting, where you kinda pointed your gun in the right direction and the game would consider that "good enough".
Overall, I prefer the controller, but I don't like carrying a controller around with me, so I use KB+M the majority of the time.
