Cracks in walls
I loosely understand that I shoot walls with non-starter weapons to make cracks and then use a blank to open the crack into a passageway.

Besides using the map to see where a secret passage wouldn't fit whats a tip on finding these passages? Is there one on each chamber? Are they usually in certain areas of the wall if there are any?

Always shoot the walls in treasure chest rooms (that's where I've had the best luck finding them).
Shields also open cracks, when you're shot.
Look for nice, straight walls, where there's an open space in the map, large enough to fit a room in. A lot of times, I've noticed if a room is empty and leads nowhere, it might actually have a secret room. If you're familiar with maps, you'll also notice places where doors have actually spawned in previous generations, which could possibly hold a secret.
Otherwise, Brick of Cash can locate secret rooms. Many weapons that hit walls just as much as enemies (room clearers), such as the Corsair, Suber Meat Gun, Crescent Crossbow, Railgun, Rube-dyne, Dark Marker, Brick Breaker, and Gunbow often accidentally reveal secret walls, when you use them.
Not much, still my two cents.

There's 1-4 per chamber I think. They're most commonly attached to chest rooms / shops / end level rooms / npc rooms. The shopkeeper doesn't really like you shooting though. If you have an active like the ring of triggers you can check the walls without causing problems

Alright. Treasure chest rooms, NPC rooms, dead ends.
Shopkeeper's room might not be worth checking.
Up to 4 secret passageways per chamber. That's more than I expected.

Is it possible to open a secret passage if you haven't cracked the wall yet? Like if I just walked into the shop and activated a blank would it open any hidden passages?

it would, but you're taking a very large gamble.

Just making sure.
If armor went off I could be certain there was no reason to check that room.
And the gamble might be worth it in the shopkeeper's case. I'd rather lose a single blank than lose the shopkeeper entirely.

I always check chest rooms, elevator room and NPC shops with my guns, if it's not there, use a blank on the shop, if still not, I usually don't bother much more because Secret Rooms usually end up being disappointing anyway. But with that technic I'd say I get them 75% of the time, maybe miss 1 or 2 in a run.
Another thing to note is that there is the possibility that there is just no secret room in the floor at all.

On a related note: does the water gun reveal secret rooms? Hoping it would have some kind of use...

It does have a use. Spray the fireplace on floor 1, go into it, activate the lever with E, you'll see the rest.

I typically just kick a water barrel into the fireplace myself. I rarely have a liquid weapon on hand.

Well, there's the barrel for that... I meant uses other than hogging space in a perfectly fine chest? :-P

The watergun has serious knockback. Though I would honestly rather use other guns (more killy guns) I'm sure it'd be able to knock most bulletkin into pits with ease.

At least you have some obviously easy options for when you run into a gun muncher. It takes the pressure out of the decision if it's a clearly lower class weapon than the rest of the guns.

Edit: I cna't believe that's censored. Lets call it a Gun Eater then.
