All we ever get is tweaks and stat rebalances.
Mechanics that used to be really fun before launch were scrapped. the PVE server is nice and relaxing if you already went through the grind and maxed out everything but at that point you log in every now and then.
PVP is incorrectly implemented down to the DNA.
The permanent loss of ship and equipment is a cool idea but doesn't work if you wanna solo on the PVP server.
You are guaranteed to be ganged up on and killed if you try. After losing everything a few times it becomes too frustrating to even bother with it.
The game had a lot of promise in the early days, but it has been left in a semi rudimentary state and feels more or less abandoned.
Same mechanics, same graphics since launch
Every now and then it gets a patch and then ships have a new turn rate of 0.000125% more or less than the previous patch.
Or certain ships built out of several types of woods among too many ambiguously described wood types for which you need a mile long spreadsheet to compare stats, will sometimes be patched to be 0.000069420% faster or slower, or have more or less hitpoints based on some seemingly arbitrary standard or realism that doesn't add anything to the core game.
It's 2022 and we still can't have proper lighting in the game, or realistic weather conditions, or crew and flags, or any sailing mechanics in the open world where 90% of your time is spent.
Ship customization, which is limited and underdeveloped...is a DLC. Because why not?
The only significant change to the game since launch was the implementation of a pretty interface which has its own quirks but at least it doesn't look like a html button menu anymore.
Oh and now we have a baloon....which you pay for... in order to avoid PVP-ing on the PVP server.
I suspect once Skull & Bones is released, PVP players will jump ship, and PVE will continue to exist as a pretty screensaver for those who just want to relax and imagine they are having a long journey on the open seas while the wind spins counterclockwise forever and the ocean noise soundtrack plays on a loop. And sometimes it rains but you only see it if your have the camera at the "correct" angle.
add me to the list as well.. i have over 2500 hrs... most while the game was decent... the way the devs make sweeping changes wiping out progress, nerfing/buffing, changing mechanics for a RELEASED game, turning ships that took months to aquire into junk... with no consideration for the players ... you bet I agree .. they deserve the negative review... just because the game was good doesn't mean it still is.
Finished the Grinds on both PvP and PvE, unlocked every ship I wanted. Had some fun in PvP, and also had fun in fleets doing large PvE battles with clan mates in PvE.
Personally on any game where the devs "pull the rug out" from underneath you makes me instantly dislike the game.
Having a game like NA where you need to master complex mechanics, and then having them all change at the whim of a dev frustrates me to no end.
I take a break and usually come back every 6 months to get my naval combat fix (which the game does the best out of anywhere lets be clear here).
But when you come back you have to relearn everything you thought you knew because the cannons have changed, or the ship manouvering has all changed.
Ships you used to know their limitations are all different, some ships have totally moved from a 3rd rate to a 4th rate or 5th rate upward. (Looking at USS Constitution and USS United States).
It's just stupid.
Also once you have all the ships you wish, there is only so much enjoyment you can get from PvE for example before you run out of interesting things to do.
I grinded all my favourite ships to max rank for the book slots then stopped playing.
What would make me want to play more?
Group missions set in historical battles like Trafalgar or the Nile. Maybe you can queue up with friends and join a mostly AI scenario where you and five friends have to support the fleet and win. Something like that would go a long way.
Pirates of the Burning Sea had an entire career for you to do whilst leveling, with unique quests all over the world for you to do. Where you get promoted as your achievements grow. And it was vastly more fun than the grind in Naval Action. Naval action just has a superior combat system. But the overall game is bare bones and nothing to do if you can't entertain yourself.
The other thing is that during LARGE scale battles. Even on the best PC out there you are under 60 FPS regularly. And the PC is running SUPER HOT.
The game needs more optimisation. This actually put me off playing the game during last summer where I was worried my PC would overheat, where it is only NA where I have this issue.
Anyway that's all I can think of off the top of my head. But bare in mind I haven't played the game since last July.
I do find myself wanting to get my naval fix again now, but the thought of all sailing turning changes and now cannon changes just put me off completely.
Including that of a mission editor, which could provide players literally with endless content popping up all over the map and you could just pick them up to your liking.

While the battling itself is solid and does not need any improvement in my opinion, given AI learns new tricks from time to time and stays challenging in some new ways, there is a huge desert which just needs watering and some seeds to be planted.
- meaningful trading, which effects well-being of ports, or lack of it means degradation
- upkeep which amounts the more ports a clan holds, leading to a better distribution of ports among smaller clans instead of 1 - 3 dominant ones in every nation taking and keeping all, while ports stay mostly undeveloped.
- NPC fleets which captured player ships keep them in their middle until next maintenance or player captures it back (this mechanic bears a lot of surprise elements which make you want checking them for such anomalities)
- introduction of bot fleets sailing for you (basically for automated trading, however they need to be attackable, if even by hostile NPC on PvE server, and you could jump in and take over for defending them, if you happen to be at a port at that moment the notification comes in, else they just try to flee as usual)
- logistic challenges, such as providing your fleet with ammunition (all types, including balls) and provisions at sea for maintaining operational status. Need to go to port for resupplying. Want to avoid resupplying stopovers? Fill your ship with ammo, extra sailors ("crew space" suddenly could make sense) and repairs.
- some server-wide events like treasure fleets composed of giant royal transports (aka 'Rotterdam') and a dangerous elite escort which travel all over the map. When they make it to destination, a certain nation will see a server wide disadvantage (of course each time another nation).
Ideas we had. For years. I would have understood other projects, like the promising 'Sea Legends', take now all attention of devs, but as we know changes are planned here so they are not lacking the will to invest more work, it is just the kind of work which produces something most people get alienated by. And then there is Stillfront... with an influence on the future of this game most of us are most suspicious of...
Alrighty, looks like I'm going to file away my Naval Action once again into the dark bottom drawer where it can be very conveniently ignored. Didn't expect it to be this quick and uncomplicated LOL.
I remember a couple of years ago, when there were 200 players on per day, you could sail from Charleston to Boston, and never see another human.
This IS an issue, and breaks immersion for the game.
Yeah they added all these nations that were never a major player in the time period in the Caribbean. And I never understood why either. The map is too large to have 1000 players or less spread out so far.
They should cut back to say Pirates, USA, GBR, France, Spain, Dutch and Denmark like in real life.
And yeah they should stop tweaking numbers and start adding more missions, more things to do. Stop experimenting at the playerbase expense.
(PvP server)
Who seeks action just has to go to the patrol zone or linger around free ports where the hunters wait for victims. And event zones when it is Diana event. Otherwise, the vastness of the ocean works both ways, it is hiding you as well and offering you escape by disappearing when you need getting away. A large map is the only hope for a trader to remain undetected. If it were a bathtub size map, trading would be even less doable.
(PvE server)
Lots of space and not meeting too many people is no problem at all for you. If you want to meet other ships, arrange meetings over global chat. Anyway, we got our international communication taken away from us, so does not matter really if you have 3 other nations you can't talk to, or triple the number. Bad just the same. All hail f2p coming! :(
It's 2022 and people use 3rd party communication to instantly speak with eachother miles apart in the game world.
And let's not pretend that people are not just double tapping HOME on their keyboard and flying their camera around to scout for other players. (Why this has not been removed is beyond me).
Anyway it's not really important.
My issue with the PvP is mainly people multiboxing and using alts etc and other shady tactics. This is inevitably what kills PvP for me.
Honestly I just pine for a co-op version game with Naval Actions combat mechanics, with more things to do.
I really enjoyed Pirates of the Burning Sea for port battles, the invitation system, the pre-planning room and then the naval fight ending in an assault on land on the ports is a lot of fun.
PotBS SUCKED balls. The devs, five of them, used to ROUTINELY sail out of port, on 100% maxed out, perfectly buffed ships, and destroy whatever puny humans were out there.
This was an absolutely game breaker. They ruined the game for their own players, and the game went out of business as a result. Biggest example of ignorant game developers in the history of gaming.
I also saw these same devs take over ports in under a minute, by dumping barrels of product in rapid succession.
I don't mind losing, or having a setback, but I have 100% knowledge that these devs simply coded in cheats for their own use, cheats that were NOT available for anyone else. SMH...
While it's not the most fun part of the game, the open ocean is unique and finding enemies via that ocean scaling is as realistic as possibly it could be. It's an asset or an attribute of Naval Action that shouldn't be put into decline.
I agree with this. The answer is not to shrink the world, but to increase the number of players.
For someone that hides their library, you are nothing but a hypocrite. After reading your comments here, you are nothing but a waste of oxygen on this planet, you contribute nothing. My review of the game has absolutely nothing to do with my comment inside this thread.
I have 1700 hours in this game, which isnt much compared to many. Most of those hours are spent AFK, trading goods on a map with zero content.
I suggest you think before you speak, probably good advice in your real life outside of your sad, tough guy portrayal here, on the internet.
