do you lose your ships when you die?

There are "lives" on the ship, called durability. Im thinking its five for most, unless it's captured, then its one. Once you run out of Dur., you must buy a new ship. Or, you can use the free Cutter as much as you want, without fear of not having anything.

The higher rate ships like the HMS Victory have less durability I believe.

If the ship gets down to 1 durability and then it sinks and you lose that last durability the ship is gone forever. Higher tier ships have less and I think the 1st rates only have 1 or 2. The best thing to do with ships with multiple durabilities is once it gets to 5 (provided its not some epic crafted orange quality ship) is to sell it and use the money to put it towards a new one. That way you don't have to shell out the full price.
