But to build on this, we've got other officer slots for cannonry, boarding (marine officer), sailing, provisions (which have been discussed), doctor, whatever, and ea. of these we can chose to level for whatever type of gaming you wish to do. John1 maybe would be extremely useful for a merchant/traders player, but John2, a marine officer would not. A provisions officer John3 would be great for morale, and a pirate crew for boarding? Any of these or any other paths could be exploited perhaps for depth to the game.
You could make it a dice roll, a percentage, a life of the officer for any/all accuracy, morale boosts, or doctor capabilities. John1 is an expectional officer but he's only accurate to w/in 100 nautical miles? This would provide those that happen to like navigation on their own to forego any leveling of a navigational officer, but maybe they like the cannonry idea, or the boost to a morale's officer.
Agreed. This enhances the immersion, and also have the benefit of having a higher percentage of ships closer to shore, just as in real life, so that they may be boarded, or sunk!
Map mod, nice, dling.
Now, I wouldn't want an arrow pointing what direction Im facing, and marking every ship within range, on my map. But, a simple "dot", or "ship" decal, wouldn't be too far fetched for this time period.
Do we really think that Captains of the time period wouldn't mark their own location as they went?
IDK, torn.......
Number 2 has to stay... as we can't "feel" where the wind is coming from. Number 3 is just silly. But I could get on board with 1 for sure... and number 4 isn't all that bad either.
twas good, I'll admit that.
Whats this downloadable GPS for this game ? Auto-Nav FTW

navigation is so hard, you look at the the port you want to go to, you point your ship in that direction according to the compass, you sail to land, you identify terrain features, look at map, orientate your ship in direction of port off of terrain features, sail to port.
And the longer you stay in the map mode the more your vision starts to swim, until finally everything goes dark and you hear a thud followed by heavy snoring, and when you hammer your map mode key in an attempt to return to the game you just activate annoyed groaning sounds.
that would actually be pretty interesting. also add a reason to explore so they could have xp rewards for finding ports
