Stick on optimised rudder and lightweight blocks and tackle and it handles quite acceptably. It's certainly tough enough for its place in the ranks and provides a very stable gun platform.
I find if your 'ranger' finds plan so do the rest of your shots (typically).
For me the only BIG disappointment with the cerb is having no chaser guns on the bow...I mean 'cmon....put a couple of guns up there....this makes trader hunting harder...other than say trader snows which are catchable and then you muscle em into the wind....and they are yours.
Of course there is the shock of coming from Fore and aft rigged ships or Brig type ships, but even with manual sailing the Cerb was just too sluggish for its size.
Personally i didnt enjoy it at all and was more than glad when i made it to Captain Rank.
During Seatrials I loved the Surprise and I still felt when I got bigger ships, that pound for pound a well crafted Surprise was probably the best compromise of manouvrability, survivability and firepower (I loved Trinc to but found the Vic's and Santi's like sailing an Island and very different Gameplay).
I have the Renommee available to me to (free one) but she looks 'thin' and missing a few guns....was thinking use the Ren when my role is to chase and keep enemies in combat/trade ship attacks etc....but use the Surprise for general biffo
Sure, but it's no shock that those ships are better given the higher rank requirement to crew them and the greater cost to build. With no upgrades the Cerb definitely is sluggish, but with them I find it goes from a tad painful to 'just fine' as far as maneuverability and makes for a decent little ship.
What pains me somewhat is when I see guys saying that they are sailing undercrewed Surprise, Renommee or even Frigates because somebody has told them the Cerb is a terrible ship.
Its just that the following ships are better in every aspect! Normally you would trade some manouverabilty for more guns and armor. Its like that from Cutter to Niagara and from Renomee to Santissima (i guess). Only the Cerb is a little exception because getting the next rank means an upgrade in every single aspect of the ships statistics.
@Jeheil: I started off with a Renomee and i really liked the speed. But it felt a little undergunned, and a lot too squishy. It was a captured Fir one though.
After that i got myself a captured Live Oak Surprise and i like it a lot better. Its just 4 Guns more, but it feels a lot stronger. Armor and HP are definitly way above the Reno. And the manouverabilty is also better. If only i didnt get laughed at by my buddies when they and our prey just keep getting distance at me when sailing in a strait line. Or if i hadnt to ask them to go to 80% sail in open world all the time :D
Crafted myself an exceptional Oak Renomee now and at least the squishyness doesnt bother me too much anymore. And i really like the Ship as a chaser and for its looks. But i still like the surprise better.
For the next rank i crafted myself an exceptional frigate and i have a mastercraft belle poule, but havent tried either one.
But most likely i will go for a trinc.
the surprise has the issue that the lean on it is insane and u would have to double up on ur manual sails every time u go for a shot. not fun...
frigate on the other hand is quite good and i see it as better turning cycle then a cerby i am able to zig zag and hit a target with both broad sides quite quickly.
i do like the nimbleness of the surprise and the bow and stern guns but that lean is just too insane for me.
even mastercraft optermized ballests dose jack all
The stern chasers kinda work at medium to long range, you really need to aim them up so they're useless at close quarters. God only knows why anybody would put gun ports in that position.
Hitting 'T' to lower your stay sails, along with optimised ballast, goes a fair way to correcting the heel of the Surprise. I still prefer the Renommee personally, but I've never got round to buying/crafting an exceptional Surprise to make a fair comparison. Just love the Ren's speed since you can pretty much control any engagement and usually disengage with ease if it goes pear shaped.
