I prefered med's on mine. I liked having a bit longer range. And, when you start out, those other ships you are going up against, are quick. It's hard to get up close with a shotgun, aka carro's..lol
But, when you rank up, and the ships get a bit slower. Carro's come in real handy.
Just my opinion.
People use longs as an argument for PVP usage, and I agree there - But if all you're doing is shooting NPCs, I can only recommend using carronades.
Try all 3, it isnt like they are expensive. Make your own choice for what works for you, your skill, and playstyle.
I rolled very good with it and am now starting to switch to medium cannons with the 200-crew Cerberus. Before that Carronades were pretty damn good and probably still are.
Personally i prefer carronades in a cerberus or surprise vs. any AI. It's a lot more damage in a single broadside than any other cannon. And usually your shots won't bounce off as long as you don't fire in a very shallow angle. It's another matter in pvp though.
I totally agree with the Long Cannon as the best base. Once you get up to a multi deck ship though carrinades are great as a scondary cannon type, at least in my oppinion.
