But things do change between sessions, so you can't just start where you left off.
If you really can't stand MMOs, even PvE, then check out X-Rebirth. If, that is, you can do ships that sail the vacuum of space... 8-)
I just sailed to the Bahama islands off of Florida. The islands appeared slowly out of the early morning mist, on one side and then the other. I looked at the compass and the map, trying to decide which way to turn to find my port destination...
Look up some of the videos on YouTube, they are great and you can see what the battles are like.

Also single player of this era - total war napolean and empire, sid miers colonization, im sure paradox has something this era too as well as anno 1404. (i know these are strategy but still)
Fact of the matter is there are far more single player age of sales era games then multiplayer. only big ones i know of are this, pirates of the burning sea, uncharted waters...
I played all those single player.
And I don't like mmo because I have way too much competition in real life, and want just to relax in virtual workds, without being pushed to improve myself there. I want calm, relaxing gameplay, where I decide what should be done, which enemy to fight, where to save and load, and so on.
You can have all this by playing on PvE and turning off chat. Other players will affect the trade and ship availability, but simply think of them as advanced AI (or not so advanced in some cases).
As mentioned above the PVE server might be the closest you get to a single player version but that kind of goes against what an mmo is about.
