I guess SOME ship has to be the most powerful of the 5th rates but man...this ship sounds like it should maybe be a 4th rate like the Connie...don't know

Both carry 24lb cannons on the gun deck and 42lb carronades or 12lb cannons on the weather deck (Indy isn't the ONLY frigate that can carry the 42lbs...Connie is a frigate. Nitpick.) the Connie only has 4 more 24lbs cannons and 6 more 42lb/12lb on the weather deck.

Indy actually has MORE broadside weight loaded with carronades, almost as many guns, along with the Connie, is the only frigate carrying 24lb guns OR 42lb carronades AND has more armor than the Connie. Only thing Connie has significantly more of is men.

I don't think the difference of 4-24lb cannons and 6-42lb carronades (or 12lbs) Creates as much of a seperation between the Indy and the Connie as between the Indy and the Trinc.

I don't know a lot about this stuff...particularly the rating system so it's really more of a question. Just seems to me that the Indefatigable is better placed as the smallest BUT fastest and 2nd most heavily armored 4th rate than the CLEARLY most powerful, fastest and heavily armored 5th rate by a country mile

It's armament is like a 4th rate. But its crew size is that of a 5th rate.

its armament and crew is actually of 5th rate, rating isnt done by gun size but rather gun count.

If I understand the gun rating system as it worked with the British-during the Napoleonic war anyway-, a 4 RATE was any ship rated 50 guns or more.

The Constituition is rated by the U.S. Naval board as a 44 gun frigate. Now many ships CAN carry more than the rating calls for but nevertheless, the Constitiution is a 44 gi. Frigate and if following the standards of the time, would be a 5th rate.

Looking at the naval action wiki for just the HMS surprise, the British rated it a 28-gun frigate even though it carried 32 guns and in Naval Action carries 38!

I suspect Naval action called the Connie a 4th rate because of the amount of guns it CAN physically carry and the amount of crew. (I don't believe either is considered in the traditional rating system). I agree with rating the Connie as a 4th for game play purposes.

My point is that we seem to have made an exception to the "actual gun rating" rule for the Connie Already. So if we think it does fit better for gameplay purposes as a fourth great we made that exception once before for gameplay

Maybe I'm off-base and the only one who thinks so....wouldn't be the first time

Personally i think they in game are using actually gun counts, navies historically had a habbit of mounting more guns than what vessels were rated for. The ingame indie does only have 44 just as she was rated as 44 gunner, connie might have been rated 44 but she carried more IIRC

Almost all ships carried up to 10 more guns than they were 'rated' for. The Constitution carried 54 guns (56 on some occasions) during the War of 1812, her sides were thicker than a 3rd rate's, she had 475 crew and she outran a Leda class frigate (Shannon) and 3 other 5th rates and a 64 who were all chasing her at the same time. She is by far the most nerfed ship in the game compared to her real life self. Rate doesn't really mean anything, it is just a name.

I am a bit unsure, but I think as for the british rating system the carronades didn't count towards rating during the 18th century. However the rating system varied a lot over time and between countries, and I feel that the Constittution has enough qualities to put her in a rate above 5th rates.

This is a bit off topic but:

No, she is not by far the most nerfed ship. As for outrunning the british squadron:
"The resulting 57-hour chase in the July heat saw the crew of Constitution employ myriad methods to outrun the squadron, finally pumping overboard 2,300 US gal (8.7 kl) of drinking water". According to wiki they are tied as far as speed goes, both being able to do 13 knots. This might differ in angle of wind, but still having to use tricks to escape just shows that speedwise there is not much diffrence. One could argue that the Leda class is the most nerfed ship in the game due to balancing the ship between the suprise and consti in the early alpha. It could recive a bit more on the armor side and still fit the same niche in the game without being overpowered.
