How do you demast a ship. Do you use chain or balls?

You can demast only with ball
Masts are parted in different sections, Top, center and bottom. Top has 50% thickness of the bottommast. Center has 75% thickness of bottom mast.

You need to penetrate the mast to do damage. So shooting on center and top is the most effective.

Yes, masts have thickness and HP. (Every mastsection has its own HP and thickness)
So make sure to hit the same section and mast to get the mast down.

Easiest are the topmasts on every ship, takes 1-2 hits to get a topmastsection down.

i dont even bother shooting at the top and middle.. i just plink away at the top of the bottom section and after (usually) about 4 good salvos the mast comes tumbling down

any form of ball will do including double shot and charge but i tend to just use ball.

chain just rips apart the sails in this game.

How do you aim up though? I watched a video on aiming and the guy said the red line is the last place you shot but I am trying to do the exam now and even if I hit the mast 3-4 times it always seems to require more and time runs out before I can hit it again. Just want to get this over with as the rest should be easy even the final exam as hitting a ship isn't the problem I am having hitting the mast is I have tried it both broadside and also down the centerline of the ship and nothing seem to do enough hit damage to the masts to remove it until the tutorial which was super easy it seemed.

Thoughts on how I can get this exam finished up!

for exam if you're in exam shoot one by one using spacebar. Aim at the masts. Once you cripple one, demast the othter.
