Rename the file GameOverlayRenderer64.dll and GameOverlayRenderer.dll, while Steam is running.
Note: Steam re-installs/recovers that file with each restart of the Steam client automatically.
Steam's overlay (SHIFT+TAB) will not work for obvious reasons.
______________
Possible reasons, in case the crash is tied to GameOverlayRenderer64.dll:
- Graphics driver version conflict, try a diffrent GPU driver version
- Conflict with other overlay software, which is running in background => disable it.
- Bad/invalid Windows registry entries, clean up with CCleaner
Worst case scenarios":
- Clean install Windows (for testing purposes, just as a secondary (dual boot) installation on a different partition);
- Hardware failure (CPU, RAM or HDD/SSD), check your hardware with specific software (for example: Prime95, MemTest, CrystalDiskInfo)
