I want Oro the most.
"Leaked lists" aside, I was expecting Vega, Balrog and Sagat to arrive as DLC. Not because of any personal dislike of them but rather because they have such a small roster that I would have liked that they used it for characters that we haven't seen for awhile.
At this point they're just making SF2 yet again and tossing in a few new characters. I'm just not interested in that. That's not a $60 game to me. Depending on what happens next SFV could quickly become a GOTY edition for $30 kind of game.
Your being selective with what series you choose to compare the current roster with.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the closest comparison in terms of roster. All 8 returning characters announced so far where in that game.
6 of the returning characters where in Street Fighter 4 as well as Street Fighter 2.
Its least like Street Fighter 1 and Street Fighter 3 with only 3 returning characters.
Having said that Bison and Vega look to play substantially different from both there SF2 and SF4 versions.
I'm not as familiar with Alpha series but I've been told Charlie seems to also have a new play style.
Ryu is always going to be in every Street Fighter game and he will also play the same, no suprise.
Ken while still sharing strong similarities to other Shoto's has never been differentiated from Ryu in the history of the Street Fighter series.
Chun, Cammy and Birdie look similar to previous incarnations but there are some subtle changes.
Face is a bit funky at times, and the new Neutral Stance is... new. But overall happy, wonder what the purple eyes will mean in his story.
Not being a charger feels weird for me. I'll try to adapt. But if Urien is in and he remains his charge char status I might deflect.
Seems he is keeping his fast longrange gameplay at least.
New specials looks nice and some of the combos are just faboules. Unless something weird happens Main for SF5 found =P
All true. Perhaps I shouldn't compare it to SF2 specifically.
However, I was hoping that SF5 would be more of its own thing that avoided most of the standard characters that have been present since SF2 and would instead focus on characters that we haven't seen for awhile. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Nevermind the "predictions" stuff.
There are certain characters that appear to be attached at the hip, such as Ryu and Ken. Now that Vega has been added it's not unreasonable to assume that the other boss characters will fill in the two remaining slots.
That would give us:
Standard: Ryu, Ken, Chun, Cammy, Bison, Vega, {Boxer}, {Sagat}
Newcomers*: Necalli, {Rashid}, {Zen}, {Laura}
Returning: Nash, Birdie, ? , ?
"Not again" is the general feeling that I get from this. It's a very boring roster to me, though you're correct that calling it SF2-like isn't quite right. I say SF2 because they've been around since then but that was too general, as you pointed out.
It depends heavily on what the new characters can do and on who the two remaining returning characters are, of course, but what are they going to do with two character slots? The two slots would NEED to be Alex and Karin to maintain the hype and frankly I'm doubting that we'll get that.
Obviously I could be wrong. For example I thought that Oro would be in SF5 the moment that I saw the figure (BornFree released a video that echoed my thinking), and that doesn't look like it's going to happen. Not that I'm a fan of Oro personally, it just made sense.
Anyway it would be great to be wrong about this. I want a more diverse cast.
* The newcomers are based on Bogard's leaked info which has thus far been 100% accurate.
For example M.Bison and Sagat appeared in Street Fighter Alpha but Balrog and Vega did not appear until Street Fighter Alpha 3.
There is some speculation that characters with important roles in the overall storyline will appears, Balrog would fit this theroy has he discovered the mysterious child at the end of SF4 and that needs an explaination, Sagat however has no significant story arch remaining. He is also no longer a member of Shadaloo.
I think their is a strong likely hood that either Gill or Urien will appear. I'm basing that on the Siliconera article stating they know both Urien and Alex will be in the game, though they did not provide a source. Also the fact that in Charlies offical artwork for SFV contains the Illuminati statues from Gill's Stage in SF3 2nd Impact strongly imply that the Illuminati is involved in the games storyline. Some fans are speculating a Shadaloo v Illumanati story line.
Better yet, Udon already released in limited ammounts a comic in which it is shown it was Illuminati that put him back together.

This is one of those times that it's good to have my assumptions / guesses poked full of holes.
there will be only 2 other Alpha or 3rd strike characters, probably not more.

In green we have the classic SF2 characters or classic SF2 and SF4 returnees.
In blue old SF Alpha characters or old Alpha and 3rd strike characters.
In purpule we have the totally new characters.
Siliconera said Karin, R.Mika, Alex and Urien are in the main roster.
I say it is wrong, only 2 of them can make it at best.
You should also note on this picture that every characters have their personnal rival next to them:
Ryu + Ken, Chunli + Vega, Cammy + Bison.
Who's gonna be the last SF2/SF4 returnees ?
Who are going to be Nash's and Birdie's rivals ?
Edit: I've just seen the slide mentionned just above.
But yea, I think it gives us hints for the remaining characters or at least from wich SF game they will come from.
I don't think Balrog and Sagat are in for sure.
Sagat is not with Shadoloo anymore, and Birdie's charges mooves really reminds of Balrog's.
I think Juri is a better bet, with a female rival like C.Viper or Sakura.
I wouldn't be surprised if Capcom was working on some DLC characters at the same time as the starting roster.
