To fight stick or not to fight stick
Guys, I'm somewhat of a casual fighting game player. I LIKE them, but I'm not super great at them. I play 4 button fighters pretty decently (Injustice-esque), but six button fighters kinda fluster me at times. I've been getting into Killer instinct while I wait for this game and judge my interest.

My question is if you think I would have a better time with an arcade stick, because the layout of the buttons is much easier than that of a controller for 6 button fighters.

A fight stick is kind of an investment, but they're universal right? I can use them with pretty much any arcade game on the PC i'm pretty sure, other fighters too. Is there a decent arcade stick that's not at a rediculous price? or is this game pretty accessible with a controller (I have a PS4 and Xbox360 hooked to my PC)

First off-- you don't need a fight stick. A controller and/or fight pad is just fine. Its whatever you feel comfortable playing with. MadCatz, Hori, etc, has plenty of fight pads to choose from that have six face buttons for: lp/mp/hp, lk/mk/hk. Below I made a list of periphials if fight pads are your thing.

Hori Fighting Commander 4 Controller:

Mortal Kombat X Fight Pad:

MadCatz SFxTK fight pad:

Street Fighter V Fightpad PRO: (pre-order, not out until February 2016)

If fight sticks are your thing, something I use, but not a necessity, I would suggest using a MadCatz, Hori or Qanba fight stick. PS3 fight sticks work for USFIV(PS4) as long as a PS4 controller is connected to the console. Same goes for fight sticks that are dual-modded. If you plan on playing SFV(PS4) then dual-modded sticks need a PS4 controller connected PLUS they have an 8-minute time out (meaning you have to keep reconnecting to the PS4 every 8-minutes or so).

In addition, If you wish to bypass this, purchase the new ChronusMAX Plus with the new crossover support firmware with removes the 8-minute time (not recommended if you are a Tournament player), a TitanOne (same as the ChronusMAX) or a Brook's adapter that allows you to use Xbox 360, PS3 fightsticks on rival consoles, for example: Want to use a 360 fightstick on a PS4 and vice versa for Xbox One, etc? Use a Chronus Max Plus, Titan One or Brooks adapter.

Chronus Max Plus:

Brook Converter:

Titan One:

I assume you're playing on PC, if so, then none of this applies to you. SFV PC can use an Xbox 360, PS3/PC fight stick with little to no issue. You can use a MadCatz, Qanba/Eight Arc or HORI. However, keep in mind that if you are planning on going to a local tournament or play with friends-- then you will be a PS4 fight stick or a convertor for your last-gen fight stick.

If you don't know what fight stick to buy then I would recommend checking out Amazon, eBay or Craigslist for fightstick deals. Fighrsticks can range anywhere from $160-200 without tax. They are a bit of an investment, but they are worth it in the long run. I recently purchased a HORI RAP4 Kai 'Silent' from Arcade Shock.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to send me a private message and I'll do what I can to help you further. I hope this helps.

Take care

Sticks are way more important in SF4 than SF5, since it helped a lot on techniques like plinking (1 link combos), piano roll, FADC and red focus. I think pads are way more viable on 5.

BTW from my research the only sticks worth buying are the ridiculously overpriced ones, that have good components such as Sanwa.

Hmm, are there any previous editions of street fighter that are SIMILAR to street fighter 5 that I could "Practice" on and get a feel for how a gamepad works? I realize this is a new edition with new mechanics, but is there a game that shares a "Feel" to this game? Like... If I got good at Street fighter alpha 3 or something (just throwing a name out there) will the feel of it get passed over?

Smug, Wolfkrone, PIE Sci, NuckleDu and Snake Eyez say hi. A controller nor a fight stick make a difference. Its all about preference and playing comfortably. I won't comment on what you find "overpriced", but fight sticks are priced that way for a reason. They are worth every cent.

Street Fighter Third Strike or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo--- most players are using USF4 to practice for SFV than the former.

In terms of execution, most SF games would do the trick... probably SF4 in Omega mode is the closest ones, since SF5 is easier than SF4 in terms of execution.

They are priced that way because there's demand. But what I'm traying to say is that you probably won't get "the benefits of the stick" such as the faster dash input, easier plinking and piano rolls on a cheap stick that have unresponsive components.

Once again. A pad nor fight stick matter. There are no benefits. Everything you are saying in regards to their differences are irrelevant. However, I do agree with the difference of a top-of-the-line stick compared to a cheaper stick like a Mayflash or the older MadCatz SE's.

So, in summary, Stick vs Pad is purely player skill difference, none will give me a "Leg-up" on the competition, just whatever I'm personally better able to use. But stick Vs Stick DOES have an impact

100% correct. Its all about execution and fundamentals at the end of the day.

I disagree with that. There's a mechanical advantage on the way your right hand have access to the buttons on a stick that makes piano roll and plinking much easier than on a X360 gamepad. The guy above will say that there are a number of high level players that rock gamepads, and it's true, but there's a reason why there are MUCH more high level players on sticks, and it's not because they are posers or have a passion in throwing money away on expensive and huge gadgets. You'll be able to perform all the moves on both controllers? Yes, but the same could be said if you played on keyboard.

I mean, I'm pretty sure that most people here wouldn't win a single round against Broly Legs, but that doesn't mean that playing with your tongue is just as good as with all your fingers, right?

Its because you have pro players that don't like the feel of a gamepad and their execution is better on a fight stick. That being said-- that doesn't make a fight stick superior to a gamepad. Its all about personal preference.

Every player had a "mechanical advantage" over Luffy at EVO, yet he won, with a PS1 gamepad--using Rose. Your argument had been rended invaid, sir.

And you're comparing a tongue to fingers. Horrible, horrible example.

The problem I have is when I play with a pad I use my thumb for Lights and mediums, so it makes it hard to hit multiple buttons right after the other because I have 1 finger doing all the work. Also, I use my other thumb for movement, which makes doubletapping a direction a little difficult to do swiftly (maybe I should use Dpad not stick...)

I'm gonna practice on my friends Street Fighter Alpha 3, he'll let me borrow it, mostly I want to try Karin, she's the one that interests me alot. That and Juri. I already know Karin is very different in SF5, but her style is still there, I can adjust.

OK, so let's compare it with a X360 gamepad with only five buttons, because that's what he uses. You don't believe that an 8 buttons controller have any advantage over a 5 buttons one?
