Why mod your stick?
Someone care to enlighten me on the benefits?

Besides the obvious fact that different buttons feel differently, what other benefits are there? I hear talk of "quality" but what does that mean? Do they break more often if they're low quality? Do you actually get faster inputs? Just curious.

Modding is often dependent on what you want. With buttons, thats not necessarily "modding". Thats more of just custimization. Modding would be stuff like adding LED's, neutrixs cable, a new/addon PCB for dual console support, etc. Changing buttons is often dependent on both what your stick offers and what you like the feel of. Example is having a HRAP 3 with Hori stock buttons, which are crap. Mod them out for Sanwa buttons and the stick is 100x better. I custimize my stick to my liking, and its mostly based on appearance and nothing else. I do plan to mod an old TE case I had to make it completely functional. Its a hobby at this point.

I use silent sanwa buttons and special mircoswitches for less noise while mashing :compa:
I was under the impression that they just put foam pads in the button to make them silent.
Modding/Customizing can be pretty fun, Hell its been a great experience for me. I had a crappy $30 Mayflash fight stick and decided to upgrade in time for SFV. I went on to amazon and found a used MadCatz SFIV Arcade fightstick for $50. all the rest used where double the price atleast without original packaging on most of them and the ones that did mention it charged more than a brand new stick today. I Had no idea on the condition besides the words "Good" and when it arrived it had its original box and packaging with manual and input sheet, The condition was fantastic, I couldn't see any surface scratches, only a little wear on the sticks ball top however LT was broken when i tested it. I opened it up, it just had disconnected itself somehow so i just plugged it back in and it worked fine.

I felt just since it was used, it might be a good idea to replace the parts to give it new life, I was just lucky to know about the Sanwa company while browsing for Fight Sticks. I found a supplier (arcade world uk) and ordered a new set of buttons with a stick and an Octogate plate for it as well. Man the thing is amazing now, replaced the white with red buttons and the white sticks now red too. So for me it was both Cosmetic and Matinence reasons.

In my time finding a new Fightstick i learned you can mod for many reasons:
Cosmetic changes
Switch from ball top to bat top
Options to switch to silent buttons or higher quality parts
Replace you're square gate on the joystick with an octo gate.
Replace the standard lower quality buttons on Fightsticks with Sanwa/Seimitsu ones
Making it work with more systems/consoles
Trying new parts from different companies to see if you prefer their feel.

Sorry for a long ass winded post. From what i've learned many Fightsticks out there are easy to open up and mantain, mod and customize. I don't tend to mod anything unless it really does improve things. Even if you have a new Hori or Madcatz you have a reason to mod. Both of them don't use the good buttons anymore I have heard from reviews and you can improve them for around $25, I'd have not gotten such a good stick for such a steal if i hadn't been interested in modding so i've that to thank for it at least. She's done me good.

I got a Venom stick for PS3/PS4 for cheap off a guy who changed his mind about SFV. It's brand new but I only paid half price for it.

I'm asking more out of curiosity because I just like tinkering with stuff :p I'd like to paint up my own artwork for it too but I can't find a template to work with :/
Just read this post here after my initial reply. Dude if you're interested in that sort of stuff i'd just go straight on to google and type in How to Mod Venom Fightstick PS3/PS4 and see what you can do with it. You could do some crazy stuff if you're of the creative type. I had only done my mods to take the old used parts off and put new ones in. I think a good amount of fightsticks can actually support you changing the face art on it (i'm not entirely sure, i've only heard of it with people printing out new overlays for their stick)

I think if you like tinkering with things especially, this thing will not be a challenge to open up and mod. I've been having a look on google, you got a good buy from you're friend there and i couldn't find anything either unfortunately, it looks pretty tricky to do something like that to you're Venom compared to my old 08' Madcatz fightstick, I really wish you the best of luck with it in the future, I hope you'll find what you're looking for soon, It could be a good idea to even check out a mod forum or two I only just got into it and i could bet someone over there could help you with the cosmetic side of things.

Sorry again for the new post. Just wanted to be sure you seen this one. I found a page with a template for you're stick. Perhaps have a look on here? http://flight-test24.rssing.com/chan-12978425/all_p254.html

Its a big ass web page. Scroll down until you see a Ken Template. I hope this can help you somehow, it seems to be a guy giving you a guide to mod the venom controller with a new overlay.

modding also bypasses the need to buy additional fight sticks if the hardware allows it. Some people just quad mod their sticks so it works on all the current platforms running. The only thing that you really cannot change is the enclosure itself. Some just offer better features to be able to switch contents in and out like the madcatz.
I've modded my Datel Arcade Stick with Sanwa Buttons and Joystick and i can assure that the difference is night and day, additionally the stock buttons started to not work properly after 2 weeks of use, so yeah i would say buy a better stick or mod your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ cheap one.

Dude thanks I just ordered it, half impulse/half informed decision, we'll see. Guess I'll just mod the crap out of it if I'm not happy enough :)

Hope you like it :) Looks very easy to mod otherwise. I got mine so cheap that even with a full mod it will be cheaper than buying it new.

Thanks! I found one, it might even be the same one you linked. Hard at work designing my own stick artwork now :) Although I'm a little tempted to put this thing I already made on it xD

I "modded" my Venom stick. Read too many forums saying OMFG SANWA IS SOOO MUCH BETTER!

So I ordered, installed them... and nothing. They feel more or less the same. I have no idea what is supposed to be so much better.
Thank you for saying this, No one else agrees with me. There is no difference.

I doubt you've ever even touched a Sanwa button.

Even if it only makes you feel better, it will make you play better though :) So in a way, there might be a difference. I'm also skeptical about any physical difference though.

I'm actually looking to switch the buttons myself but mostly because I want a different colour :o
So I can impress the girls
Damn man lol that Bananna Ken template looks awesome I'm glad i checked my notifications today and seen this thread had some replies. When you get this finished it would be awesome to see a few screenshots of it! Thats a really neat design.

As for the talk with the Sanwa buttons, they really are impressive. I'd also recommend trying out Seimitsu ones if you've got the cash around. Its really easy to change them around. Hate to seem like i'm giving them a plug but ArcadeworldUK do some really good prices on all kinds of arcade stick mods, I say this because most places i looked elsewhere such as amazon had specific colored sanwa buttons for a crazy high price.

Heh, haven't really done much work on the stick (besides practicing) lately, maybe one day :)
