Ryu's St.MP to Cr.HP

I'm embarrassed to admit that, after 668 hours of play and reaching super/ultra gold, I can't consistently pull one of Ryu's most basic links : St.MP to Cr.HP. I see every Ryu doing it all the time like it's nothing, so there must be something I fundamentally don't understand about this. For me 9 times out of 10 the opponent is out of reach. For example if I try to do it after a jump in I have to be so close to the guy I'd rather go for any other (often less damaging) combo than risk dropping it. I have no problem pulling it in the lab because I can jump at the perfect angle and the opponent is perfectly still, but I don't understand how people do it online every single time, from so many different setups. Is there a secret I don't know ?

Edit : I mean linking cr.HP with anything, for example j.SP to cr.HP

I think you answered it yourself: you just need to mentally register when you're deep enough for the link to work, and only then go for it.

You can start by only going for it in situations where you know you'll get it like after a crossup j.MK or after a meaty s.MP.

What is "SP"?

The only notations I know of are LP, MP, and HP, (for light, medium, and heavy punches)

Yeah I meant "Strong punch" so HP/Fierce, don't know where that came from.
