There are some costumes that are not available via in game currency ergo you must pay real money for them. For example Chun Li's professional costume. I think they cost 4 euros each(?). All the story mode costumes from my experience do not require real money.

It only applies to story costumes and all characters. There are some CPT stages and non-story costumes that can only be unlocked through real-life currency.

Premium costumes (3€99/costume) and CPT stages (9€99/one stage per year) can only be unlocked using real money.

The rest can be unlocked using Fight Money or real money (one season pass a year, 29€99 for 6 characters).
You can win FM by grinding boring solo modes, doing the weekly missions (~6500FM a week) , winning online matches (50FM per victory, a DLC character costs 100 000FM, a stage 70 000FM, a story costume 40 000FM etc...) and sometimes Capcom giveaways (30 000FM in August).

If you're a completionist, you're already doomed as some content has already been removed from the in-game store. Owning 100% of the game is painful and costly. People here will tell you there's no problem with having an incomplete game at full price because you likely don't use everything.

im a completionist, but i understand that i have to keep my obssessive compulsive disorder(just kidding about it, i know its a serious thing for some people) only for not real cash things, and im doing pretty well, at this point i just need a couple battle costumes to unlock all of them, i have all stages(except the ones you have to pay for it) and all color bundles(not the individuals, but honestly they are so lame that i dont care).

If you try to keep up with capcom you will spend a lot of money, and the worst part is, they realeased a lot content in the past for a limited time and you just cant have it now even if you are willing to pay, that SUCKS! But as people said, you can get all characters very easily, which is the important part of the game, and the leftovers of your FM you can spend with some stages and costumes but i dont think you will be able to get them all just grinding, you will have to choose which ones you like most.

All you need are the characters and yes you can unlock them. Best bet is to buy the game on sale, buy season 1 character pass on sale and then earn the fight money in game to fund season two. The rate of character releases is so slow that you have enough time inbetween to make 100k FM.

That is all you need to fully enjoy and learn the game, the rest of the colours and skins are up to you if you want to spend money/FM on that.

The average person will run out of FM after buying some characters. Not even the fun stuff such as stages or colors. For matches you will only earn fm when you win (barely anything) and nothing at all when you lose. So weekly missions are the best way to earn fm and obviously that takes time.

Before I thought League was grindy but then I played SFV.
Just be prepared to not have stuff for a long time #FrugalFighterV

if you are a completionist, then getting everything with FM is unlikely, but if you wanted just the characters then its pretty doable if you play regularly and complete weekly missions. counting abigails release, ive only unlocked 4 characters with FM and just 2 stages. I still have about 700k FM but am saving it to see whats in season 3

No this game has F2P style monetizing system. nothing is "unlocked" by playing. you have to grind hard for in-game currency(FM) to purchase items and most of costumes can only be bought with real money.

You can unlock 4-6 DLC characters, relatively easily by earning in-game fight money, but it becomes slower later on. If you are a new player you may consider to get character pass 2016 on sale, so you can use the saved fight money for Season 2+3 characters and stages.

But you can definitely NOT unlock everything for free, it is a false rumor, Capcom never advertised it either.

No. It is possible to unlock all of the characters though. Or some of the characters and some of the other DLC. Most DLC costumes require you to spend real money though.
