Can you unlock characters?
Just to confirm; I can buy the cheaper versions and unlock all characters over time? Even the characters in the latest season 3 pass?

Thanks.

Yes, by collecting Fight Money by leveling up your default characters as well as by participating in online matches. There are also Shadaloo Soldier Extra Battles which rewards Fight Money.

You can keep track of the weekly events by visiting the official CFN website: https://game.capcom.com/cfn/sfv/
going to take you a 'f'ing long time.

I guess it's possible but it will take such a long time that you could as well call it impossible. In order to get such amounts of FM you would have to play all available characters through all their individual content + a megaton of casual or ranked matches.

Based on my experiences you can get one seasons worth of characters but anything more than that is a stretch.

It's not only about time. You'll require skill and luck. Also some of challenges to acquire more FM are time limited and you may lose FM just by trying.
And you if you decided to buy characters with FM you won't have enough to buy costumes, colors or stages. You can't make enough to buy everything that can be bought with FM. Capcom drastically reduced the amount of earnable FM with the Arcade Edition, and added a lot of ways to lose it, while earning nothing.
Yeah, that was my concern. Almost (almost...) P2W.

You can exploit Golden Soldier FM challenges with specific characters, just watch YouTube if you don't know how, chances are very low to loose with them, unless you fool around and experiment with other tactics.
Weekly FM missions are completely risk free and the main source for FM, after you've finished all single player stories, trials and leveled all your characters to max level (LVL50), or realistically LVL25++.

The other FM challenges are for cosmetics and not meant to earn FM.

FM is an option to unlock DLC characters, without investing additional real money, but your time, by playing the game. It should be fairly easy to unlock the whole season 3, if you purchase the Arcade Edition (bundle). It was never meant to unlock ALL available DLC content with it.

It was also realistic to unlock all DLC characters with the base game in Season 1+2, before the Arcade Edition changed the FM payouts. Everyone who played ~4 hours per week since February 2016, had enough FM to unlock S1+S2 + most S3 characters, without touching hard and extreme survival mode.

Since the FM system changes in Season 3, I suggest to purchase the Arcade Edition (S1+S2 bundle) on sale, if you are a new player and want to have all DLC characters in a reasonable time span, because it will be very grindy to unlock more than 6 DLC characters now, especially, if you purchase the base game only.

Wait for a sale and get the S1+S2 Arcade Edition bundle instead.

It was ~25 bucks on Steam's summer sale 2018.

For me I just pony up the cash and get the extra stuff I want. I understand that is not an option for some so earn and spend your fm on stuff you really want. Like what was said fm was never intended to get everything...not saying it's not possible but if you pull it off high five to you

Yes, you can, I unlocked 11 characters using FM.

I would not reccoment buying the cheaper version, UNLESS there are only 2-3 DLC characters you are interested in. while it is possible to unlock any character with FM, I don't believe that it is (practically) possible to unlock *every* DLC character anymore.

there are just too many DLC characters and the FM system in it's current form isn't capable of giving you enough to get them all. when AE dropped Capcom removed the base version from the store, I think that was a good decision and I am a bit disapointed to see that it's back because it's going to set up situations where someone buys it and sees half the roster locked.

that being said, you should ask yourself if you really want every character. I have every character right now. I unlocked the first 12 (which now come with the AE version) with FM as they came out and I got the S3 pass (mostly for the huge costume bundle they were giving out at the time). and I have to admit I don't really play any of them. I mostly just stick to Karin, a base character.

if you are new to SF and want to try out everything then get AE and explore the roster. OR get the base game and play with one of the 16 launch characters + 2-3 DLC you can unlock reasobably quickly and play online. you can learn about the characters you don't have by playing against them online, and decide if they look fun or not.

you can also look up replays from every player in the world sorted by character and rank (one of this games most underrated features) and decide who looks fun that way
ive been playing daily since the game came out and ive earned 1.7 million FM so far. at this point its probably a better idea to just buy AE so you get all the s1 and s2 characters already unlocked, unless you dont like any of those characters then just get the cheaper version.
