For fighting games should you use the d-pad or the analog stick?
I mean in regards to controllers, I've heard you should switch to using the dpad since it's more accurate than the analog stick or does it even matter?

For SFV, definitely D-pad because their analog to digital conversion for the stick is janky as heck.

That said, once you get used to it it's still playable with the stick, that's what I use on my Xbone controller since the sticks are asymmetrical. But you are slightly handicapped when it comes to fast, precise inputs, especially taps (dashes).

Then again, with the PS4 controller's noisy sticks you can do some pretty hilarious hyper tea-bagging, and does anyone really want to miss out on that?

I'm going to go ahead and speak for everyone and say no.

I DEFINITELLY will never recommend the stick. Not just because I always found sticks in fighting games lame, but also because I now have two Xbox 360 controllers with broken sticks after trying it out for Zangief and Birdie special moves...

How do you manage to play street fighter with the 360's crappy d-pad?

What about tekken? Actually I never played a tekken game before.

Me neither. I won't say that just a single match in PS2 era is actually playing it.

Definitely use the D-Pad. This is already pretty much a rule between FGC. If you play on the conventional controller, the D-Pad will provide better response and accuracy for performing the special moves.

In this case, you may be able to try the analog stick to run SPD. However using the analog just to make the SPD is not practical during the game, so it would be more practical to learn the movement on the D-pad even ...
But it's rare players use the fighting pad to play Zangief. Most of them use an Arcade Stick. But there are exceptions, and recently best Zangief player, Kichipa, uses a conventional PS4 controller. However I don't know how he performs SPD, whether with the D-pad or the analog.

I don't play Tekken, but it's kind of a consensus to use an Arcade Stick. This is justified because of the movements that only depend on a diagonal touch. Tapping diagonally is a bit inconvenient either on the D-Pad or the PS4 analog.

Well if it's more accurate with the dpad why do some pros use a fightstick since that has a joystick?

I use D-pad and analog. Only depends on what game. For 3D fighters is D-pad, for 2D is analog. In 3D games I have trouble moving when I use analog, in 2D games I have trouble doing shoryuken motion and specially half or full circle motions.

I play Zangief (super gold) using Dualshock 4 and it's not too hard to do SPD using D-pad. Analog sticks feel way too loose to perform it consistently.

The joystick on a fightstick and the analog stick on a pad are 2 completely different things. You are capable of doing more precise and quicker inputs with the joystick than with the analog because of how it is designed and the fact that you are using your hand instead of your thumb.

The main problem with the analog stick is that it's too slow to use. In this game, you can probably get away with using it depending on who you use, but in games that require quick inputs like 3D fighters, and anime fighters (Guilty Gear, Blazblue, DBZF) you're handicaping yourself.

For pad players, unless you play Zangief, the d-pad is definitely better. I have some friends who play with the PS4 controller and even the guy with the highest rank of them (Diamond) plays with the d-pad.

As mentioned by MysticGospel, it should be clarified that the analog stick is very different from the fighting stick joystick. The arcade stick joysticks are more precise and robust with their microswitches, plus a host of features that allow them to be customized to perform special moves more precisely. For example, you can replace the gate of these controls with square, octagonal, or round. For a Zangief player, for example, I think the ideal is a round gate

It's because the fightstick is actually digital
