How does it work?

Select "challenges" on the main screen, then "extra battles".

Now you can browse through various "challenges", which require spending in-game currency fight money and give you the chance to unlock specific bonus content, if you manage to win.

All of the content here is just for bonus cosmetics, like titles, costumes and fighting chance (menat shop) tickets.
In the past there were also golden soldier challenges to earn character experience and fight money.

Extra Battle Costumes have 4 gem slots therefore a number in the label, you need to win all 4 battles, which are spread over a month, to unlock the current battle costume, if you miss one slot (gem), you'll have to wait until this challenge (specific gem number) is back in the rotation again.

Capcom will usually let you know either in-game when you boot it up or on Twitter with the full schedule. You simply need to win once each week to get that week’s gem, and once you have the fourth and final gem, the costume is yours.

The gem costume battles increase in difficulty but they’re still fairly easy. It’s mostly the soldiers and bosses like Shin Akuma that pose a bit of a challenge.

Costume chalanges are not that hard first 2 fights are baby mode difiuclty.
3rd fight is somwhat normal difuclty.
And 4th fight is if you play badly you miigt even lose dificulty.
As for soldiers there difiuclty scales whit the reward they give.
Silver ones are easier than gold ones but you can chese the gold ones using characters like abigail or rashid or blanka if you are not super skilled.

Avoid the boss fight events they are abnormaly hard.

But as people have stated if you miss even one gem for costumes there is no use in dojng rhe costume chalanges.
Its once gem per weak over a weak.
Final gem for Kat costume for Falke is done.
So next weak on same day start the first chalange for sagats first gem for his cyberbots costume.
And so on once per weak evry weak.
Its usualy 1 new costume per month.

As Quantum Bacon mentioned above, you'll get an in-game popup when you launch SFV, which tells you about new challenges and FM missions.

Alternatively you can also check the official SFV C.R.I. website:

It lists all news, challenges and other interesting stuff like your player profile, character data, balancing changes, server status messages etc.

You need to win the specific costume extra battles only once and then wait a week or so, before the next extra battle is available. If the corresponding gem slot is already filled, it usually makes no sense to replay that extra battle, just check the title number and the corresponding gem slot. Example: if your gem slot 1, 3 and 4 is filled, then you've missed the gem number 2 and need to wait until it is back in rotation again to get it, you don't need to replay all the 4 battles.
