And here you can find a comparison on one of the characters: https://wiki.07th-mod.com/Higurashi/img/sprite-comparison.webp
With this mod you can even add voices to the visual novel and is pretty easy to install. You can then in the mod itself select if you want old sprites, mangagamer sprites (the steam ones) or the mod sprites which come from the Higurashi ps3 version in Japan.
Also, if you don't want to install the mod that's fine too, I didn't either. I find Higurashi more alluring without voices but that's a very personal opinion of mine, very few would agree I think.
If you are unsure, throw a coin and play with what came up, tbh is a matter of taste and you will end liking more what you end experiencing first. And to repeat myself again, I just played default on everything, bought the game here in steam and just start reading with the default modern sprites without modding anything, and the result? I ended loving this visual novel, all chapters with all my heart.
Edit: If you have any doubts feel free to ask, I know this series as the palm of my hand.
old ones just look weird
no fingers lol
