Avoid those spoilers as much as you can, you'll enjoy the VN a lot more with everything being a surprise. And you should suggest she play it. There's a lot of plot that wound up on the cutting room floor to make the anime as short as it is. The chapters they're planning on releasing according to their press release are:
The four question arcs (that the first season of the anime was adapted from). Onikakushi-hen (Demoned Away Chapter), Watanagashi-hen (Cotton Drifting Chapter), Tatarigoroshi-hen (Curse Killing Chapter), Himatsubushi-hen (Time Killing Chapter).
The four answer arcs (that the second season was adapted from). Meakashi-hen (Eye Opening Chapter), Tsumihoroboshi-hen (Atonement Chapter), Minagoroshi-hen (Massacre Chapter), Matsuribayashi-hen (Festival Accompanying Chapter).
The three chapters of Rei (essentially an epilogue) which never had an official English release. Saikoroshi-hen (Dice Killing Chapter), Batsukoishi-hen (Penalty Loving Chapter), Hirukowashi-hen (Daybreak Chapter)
Hinamizawa Teiryuujyo, the original concept story that eventually became Higurashi.
Higurashi Outbreak, previously only available in an audio version as a drama CD (and relatively recently released as an anime).
And the exclusive Kamikanshi-hen (God Violating Chapter) written for Higurashi Hou.
Anything else was written for specific console systems, manga, or anime and Mangagamer doesn't have the rights to them, but the first 8 arcs are the only ones absolutely essential to the story.
Just to be sure you're clear the release on May 15th will not be all of these chapters, only Onikakushi-hen the chapter that's currently finished.
For completeness sake the rest of the story arcs released were:
For the PS2:
Taraimawashi-hen (Rotation Chapter), Tsukiotoshi-hen (Exorcism Chapter), Miotsukushi-hen (Canal Drying Chapter)
For the Nintendo DS:
Someutsushi-hen (Dye Following Chapter), Kagebōshi-hen (Silhouette Spinning Chapter), Tokihogushi-hen (Untangling Chapter), Kotohogushi-hen (Congratulating Chapter)
Manga Only arcs:
Onisarashi-hen (Demon Exposing Chapter), Yoigoshi-hen (Beyond Midnight Chapter), Utsutsukowashi-hen (Reality Breaking Chapter), Kataribanashi-hen* (Anthology Chapter), Kokoroiyashi-hen (Heart-Healing Chapter)
*Reader submitted comics.
Anime Only arc:
Yakusamashi-hen This arc took place in season 2 of the anime between Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen and covered plot details Deen studios made the mistake of leaving out of season one.
I'm just hoping the Steam release results in a popularity surge that brings us Ufotable's Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. And then maybe they can do a decent adaptation of Umineko too.
Edit: And Rei was done by Deen as an OVA. Aside from adapting the PS2 arcs, the DS arcs, and the manga arcs all that's really left is the very recent Kamikanshi-hen which I understand actually builds off the events of Outbreak. Of course Outbreak might be better in the original VN.
Yep. The Reality Breaking Chapter is actually Utsutsukowashi-hen in Japanese. Thanks for pointing out my copy paste error. Fixed in the original post.
