Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

All DLC "included"
I own the original Sleeping Dogs, with several DLC (most notably various costume packs), so when I saw the Definitive Edition included the DLC I was missing for a sweet price, I was in...

for a nasty surprise.

See, in the original Sleeping Dogs, when you finished the mission with Ming (essentially, when you get acces to the open world), you got access to the DLC. Clothes and vehicles magically appeared in your wardrobe & garage (respectively).

In the Definitive Edition, you have to buy these shiny toys with in-game cash. In some cases, quite a lot of in-game cash. I've only just started, but several outfits that would be immediately available had I bought the DLC for the original are only available from a vendor for $350k. Each.

Since I bought the Definitve Edition specifically for the extra DLC, discovering that none of it was available right up front (as it was in the original game) was shocking and very disappointing. Nothing in the description on the Store Page talks about the change in access to the DLC. Anyone buying the game for access to the DLC (as I was) is in for a rude surprise.

Don't violate your customer's expectations. I don't understand why DLC doesn't work the same way it did in the original, and why there is no warning or really any indication at all that it might work differently.

Hi there,

I understand that it might not ideal for some, but opinion is actually quite split on this topic. All the DLC is there, all you need to invest is a bit of time. We did it this way, so that Sleeping Dogs wouldn't be ruined for new comers to the game.

Previously, when we sold bundles of DLCs, we got complaints from people saying that the free DLC essentially ruined the challenge of the game for them. We felt integrating the costumes in this manner best serves everyone as a compromise.

Sorry to have dissapointed you! The red envelopes are still scattered around town though, so you should be able to bolster your money if you find enough of those.

Since I'm aware that the integration of the DLC isn't likely to change (business reasons, mostly), I'd suggest making it clear to potential buyers. It could be a simple as short video talking about how the DLC is integrated into the story for smoother transitions, or a paragraph in the description. I know this would have helped me.

As a side note, I don't personally feel that having the DLC ruined the game experience, but I did finish the game the first time without managing to get max Triad experience, which really annoyed me. The advantages the DLCs gave me made it far more likely on my second play-through that I would have gotten max Triad experience, which is part of the reason why I was a little upset they were not immediately available in the Definitive Edition.

Also, according to what I have read, most of the cars are not available until after the main story is finished. For me, this places an incentive on rushing through the main story without doing the side quests, so I can get access to the shiny toys. I'm aware this is not a problem everyone has, I'm just offering my two cents.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Thanks for the feedback. You are right that the way it's integrated is unlikely to change, but it's always good to read your thoughts and see how we can improve, be it through implementation or simply through a paragraph of text somewhere.

Regarding rushing through the main story, every player goes at their own pace, but regardless of what you do, those side quests will still be available, even after you've driven around in your shiny new toys ;)

Why aren't death by 1000 cuts and shaolin showdown repeatable in this update? They used to be repeatable with endless waves in the original and they were pretty fun, I used to rank up 200 kills and what now you can't even play em after you beat em once . Any chance of this being fixed?

Maybe after you beat them the first time they go back to being the way they were in the original? I mean that's a lot of fun just flushed down the drain

This is another thing I'm checking up on.

I LOVE that the DLC aren't dumped on you at the start of the game. For one, it doesn't take 10 minutes to click on all the mission complete messages for owning the DLC, and second, I'm not level 8, 8, 8 after completing one mission.

I agree, having all the DLC in the original version made exp almost worthless.

Looking forward to Sleeping Dogs 2.

Current balance with DLCs and Red Envelops in Definitive Edition is great. It really ruined any challenge in original Sleeping Dogs. Now it's just fine.

See, I didn't buy any of the EXP DLC until after my first play through, so that was never a problem for me. Plus, no one makes you buy DLC. :)

On the Exp issue, I recomend buying the Triad and Cop boosting clothing ASAP. Wear the Triad suit during main missions, and the Cop suit during side missions that give Cop Exp.

...mind you, if they are locked behind Face Level, you are hosed. If that is indeed the case, concentrate on buying Face Exp boosting items from the standard stores and doing Face Exp boosting side missions. Don't know if it is the case myself, as I am still finishing up the old version on PC and PS3. Those Trophies aren't going to earn themselves, after all. :fhappy:

No this is not great. I've completed both games 100% and I can tell you, by the time you'll unlock most DLC stuff, you won't need it or you'll just have no time to use it. E. g. the training dummy. You need it A LOT early in the game but in DE you get it after beating dozens of monks and I managed to do so only after getting most of melee upgrades 40 hrs in game :Die:
