Battle Academy 2: Eastern Front is a turn based tactical strategy game from Slitherine (how has JK Rowling not sued these guys?) set in WW2. You are given relatively small maps and set unit numbers and must direct your units to capture objectives and satisfy other mission criteria to complete each level across a number of campaigns, pitting the forces of the USSR against the Third Reich. There's no problems at all with the premise of the game... the problems are more to do with specifics of game design.

For starters the game is very unrealistic... from unrealistic depictions of battle strategy (the USSR fielded a heavy artillery army and that's absent here) to unrealistic, "bad" maths and probability where you can be in a position of overwhelming advantage numerically, but lose anyway due to "cheap" imbalance cludged in by the developers... this makes for a very poor gaming experience if you're an enthusiast in this genre.

On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers.

The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. There's also a bit of an issue where a lot of the UI elements are obviously stretched badly from a 4:3 ratio... quite jarring.

But the game in general does "work" (despite a few reports of serious bugs), and could almost get a pass... but Slitherine have slapped a ridiculous price tag on a 10 year old game that makes this utterly unacceptable in terms of recommendations.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Battle Academy 2: Eastern Front has the utterly unrealistic price of $40 USD, for which you could easily get any number of contemporary AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic, nay, insulting price, this is impossible to recommend.
