The basicmost problem w the tank role is that--at least at PvE games w PvP--you won't have good dmg cuz otherwise it would spell disaster, as experienced players would eat the rest of players w extremely tanky DPS's at PvP... and everyone would feel pressured to follow suit on builds.
If Tanking is NEW to YOU - start with a DK - it is the Best at "Tanking" in the game.
Woeler is widely regarded as one of the best tanks in the game. So much so that ZOS hired him. And to paraphrase Woeler:
"("Tanking", as a job is not merely "being Tanky", it is to manage resources and provide group support. Their is a BIG difference between "being Tanky" and "Tanking".)"
Many of the newer Tanks i have been seeing are merely focused on "being Tanky" and "Survivability" (through self-healing for example) - and Not focused on Group Support and Coordination - this actually makes them rather bad at "Tanking", becuz if the group fails, the Tank has failed.
Here are a couple Woeler videos that every Tank should review. Note at the beginning of Episode 2 he mentions that he consider DKs to be the Best at "Tanking":

As mentioned, go with DK if you want to exclusively tank. If you want something more well rounded, go with the necromancer.
When it comes to Races beginners make best use of Argonians due to the Potion passive...
However experiened Tanks usually want to go for Nord, as this players simply dont need the extra ress from Argonians and make better use of the additional Ult-gen and the resistances...
I haven't had time to properly try out my tank since the update and am still wondering what setup is best now.
I have better dps now than before but pve solo, as i do most of the time, is not always fun with a tank as you may know.
Any tip?
Hell yeah ..... 3.500 hours into the game... i have 6 tanks (each class) and the best- mostawesome- greatest tip ever in this regard.... Is to get you some darn procsets wich do the work for you :P
Pick Unleashed-Maelstrom2H (or any other) a grothdar and/or any other set of your liking....
Generally if you are Maining tanks and dont wanna be the slowest in clearing Overworld/solocontent let sets do the work....
with the above mentioned combo i usually just "stack" up a huge pile of adds... use 2 skills and their dead...
There dozends of Procsets wich helps "full"tanks a lot.... just check them in your collection and get the ones wich sounds the most usefull for you...
Thanks, I'll do that. I think I already have grothdar in a chest somewhere.
Usually i just rush to my target (while questing doing solo dngs) stack everything up... let my sets proc and its done :)
Warden
64 in health
Sword and board, use the taunt, throw heals, use frozen armor etc, unkillible.
Full leech set
Full imperium set
God mode
All your self heals, armor buffs, you can withstand anything, heal others, proc buffs, i love it.
I know, I'll just start there.
I stocked a ton of shoulders and heads from undaunted chests, I'll try some of them.
