The Elder Scrolls Online

worth starting back up in 2025?
I've been gone a few years and was curious if this game is still continuing to get expansions/content updates etc etc and if it's worth it to reinvest time into it? also how strong is the playerbase?

It is worth it; they have added a lot of content the past few years. They have moved from annual chapters to seasonal content, but they still have big projects being worked on, including a plan to update base game zones and items with better graphics to be on par with recently released zones and content starting already this month. The player base is healthy and, according to trackers, is ranked among the most popular MMOs right now. To translate that to my experience, on the EU server there are always players in every city and in most zones, so it is consistent with the trackers.

No, stay away, it is slowly dying out, people are in denial but the devs know this, that is why they are ramping up in game transactions to milk it dry, pvp is still completely broken, pve requiers you to play in a specific play style regardless of class, you need certain equipment that is just better than any other and they shuffle the meta around every couple months, meaning there is no freedom of creating your own class the way you wanna play it, unless you just wanna play the singleplayer aspect, in that case just play skyrim, it's better, the whole point of the combat is to break animations... what is the point of fighting if you're just breaking animation for every spell, meaning you are forced to constantly spam spells instead of casting them like a normal rpg, if you do not have specific gear you will not be welcomed to higher end raiding/dungeons because you will simply be too weak, corporate greed has won again sadly, the devs dont give a rats ass

Not worth it. Player base is gone. This ship has sailed. There are plenty of new gen MMOs to invest your time and money.

No. The game is in its worst state yet. Also it's not available sometimes due to persistent cyberattacks.

Summation: no. Incompetent management.
yes and yes
%100 no.

Yes, it's a great time to see what's new and what's coming. The game is currently undergoing another rebirth/renaissance. ZOS likes to shake things up when its needed for the health of the game, which some people have wrongly misinterpreted (including in this thread, don't listen to them). The same kind of shake-up happened with Update 6 (Tamriel Unlimited) in 2015, and when Chapters started with Morrowind in 2017.
ZOS has BIG plans for the game in 2025. There will be an announcement event in April to kick things off.

is it true that i can't play end game content unless i'm running meta skills/armor builds and sets? regardless of that class that's why i stopped playing years ago, the complete lack of freedom to be able to build your character the way you want and it still be viable yknow?

i mean, how boring is it to only play one build per class and that's the ONLY way you'll push end game content, i don't get it.

I was also going to add to my first comment to stay away from this forum and instead look to /r/elderscrollsonline for information; this community has fallen a long time ago into an unmoderated cesspool of trolling.

yes if you manage to launch it

If you mean trifecta or PvP, then yes there is a meta and you won't really be playing the way you want.

The game focuses on DPS too much at "higher" level endgame, and that's one of its faults that ZOS hasn't addressed and also seems unwilling to do so.

what is trifecta?
Honest answer depends on what would be your main activity in ESO. You can see some answers, which don't care for what you like and try to force their mostly negative vision.

So let's make some different answers.

Do you want to return for PvP, than you should find some other MMO for it. PvP was destroyed for years by very bad balancing play-style wise. You can still find some fun there, but it isn't worth to return.

Do you wish to spend time in trials and dungeons (end game PvE). Then answer is weak yes. Yes, because there were several nice new additions for late game PvE in last year.s Weak, because we dont know if it will be same for following years.

If your cup of tea is story and role playing, than it was main focus for last years. There is a lot of content you can dive in and I expect, that they will add some new.

Yes, for both PVE and PVP you can only run meta builds both armor and skills if you want to compete in end game, this is the reason why I quit and why overeland pve content is so easy because creating your own build will make you not even 1/10 the strength of whatever is meta on a given month. Wait for ashes of creation or go play ffxiv, guildwars 2, currently there are no other better alternatives, ffxiv and gw2 also do not scratch the mmo itch for me, but they will have to do for now sadly

Not true at all, my friend. Don't listen to the meta elitists, most of them just follow whatever their favorite streamer/youtuber says and they don't have much game knowledge themselves. You can run many off-meta builds, skills, and sets and still clear every content in the game, with the exception of the hardest trifectas. Even something as simple as 1-bar Oakensorc is still viable in most content. I see parses for that build that can push 100k DPS, so yeah it's very viable, even if its not top-tier efficient.
