ESO Linux Launch issue
I decided to jump ship from Windows.. again, and a big deciding factor was that ESO is *supposed* to be compatible through Proton. I have installed the game in steam, set it to run through Proton Experimental (and tried Proton 6), and Steam Play Soldier installed, and have the PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command% option in the Launcher Settings. But every single time I try to run the game, it just sits there and does nothing, then closes itself and will not run the launcher.

I have searched every single forum going back 5 years, Steam forums, this discussion board, ESO forums, half a dozen reddit threads, dozens of articles, tutorials, news posts, blogs, and guides, and not ONE. SINGLE. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. PERSON. has brought this up. not a single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ one. What is the magic trick all you people are using to get the launcher to appear on your system?

I am running Ubuntu 21.10, nVidia graphics drivers, official Steam release from the Ubuntu PPA, I even tried launching through Lutris, and there is nothing. What am I missing? What is the secret missing piece that every single person on the planet just automatically assumes you know that I somehow don't?

If you find out what the fix is would you please pass it on. I have done the same thing you have done, every time I click on Play I get a dialog box that appears, disappears before I can read it. Big help that is.

Im playing on Debian using Proton 6.3-7 without Steam Play Soldier
Using the command "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" which fixed crashes after char selection.
Feel free to contact add me then we can try to fix it together.

I posted in the SteamPlay thread and a user recommended switching distros. He recommended Garuda, so I installed Garuda Dr460nized Gamer edition which comes preloaded with several necessary packages, and all of my games are working out of the box. There are several problems in Ubuntu that prevent games from running properly that other distros don't have.

Edit: Well, every game *except ESO*, still won't even launch. I got the installer to run for a bit by running it manually in Wine, but can't get anything to start beyond that.

Download GloriousEggroll /proton-ge-custom.

https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases

Navigate to: /home/mate/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d

You may have to create a folder named compatibility tools.d. You can put all custom protons in here.

Extract the custom proton - and stick it in that folder you just created.

You may need to re-start Steam. Then select it in the compatibility menu properties. Good Luck!

Enjoy ESO!

My new Desktop layout: Running on Debian Sid Linux 64, GIGABYTE B450M-DS3H AM4 - Micro ATX, AMD Zen 3 3200G 3.6 ~ 4.0GHz (Stock Overclock @4.0GHz - sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance/Radeon Vega Series Graphics @ 2GB, Disabled) Quad-Core, Dedicated Gigabyte RX560 Gaming OC (Stock OC) @ 4GB , 32 GB of TeamGroup - Vulkan™ Ram @ 3000 MHz, x3 750 WD Black HD (2.5) and 600 Thermaltake WATT PSU.My Laptop: Acer Nitro, Debian Sid Linux 64, AMD Zen 5 2500U @ 2.0 GHz (3.6 GHz max) series APU, Quad-Core, w/Radeon Vega Series Graphics @ 2GB, Dedicated AMD Radeon RX560 (4GB), 16 GB of (TeamGroup @ 2400) DDR 4 RAM, 1 TB WD Black.

Also, I used Proton-5.6-GE-1 to get started, then upgrade my egg roll to the latest version once ESO was installed. https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.6-GE-1

This helped me bypass that annoying bug - the HD is full crap.

Hello maybe it is better here. I also asked in another forums place but recognised it is wrong.

ESO installed great with some solvable Problems.

But after I started with the Button in Launcher I got a black screen with a directX error message. This problem could be solved by installing mesa-utils and Vulkan.

After that change I also got the black screen but instead of heaving directX error ubuntu decided to log off and I had to enter my password again. After entering and starting desktop, ESO is always closed.

I am using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with my Radeon HD 6950.

I tried to set Launch Options to different states:

PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 gamemoderun %command% PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 gamemoderun %command%
PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%

I tried everything with disabled VR Option in ESO Properties and on Proton 6.3.8

I hope anybody can help.

Maybe someone has tips where else I could get support or in which forum I should write.
Thanks

Ok I will try on Thursday. I wonder if this would change the problem but I will try.
Thanks

o I tried right now... Nothing was changing. Launcher opens, can start through Launcher, black screen, crash and back to ubuntus sign in mask.

Has anybody another possible solution?
Overvoltage Jan 25, 2022 @ 10:39am
can u launch it in terminal and check if an error is thrown
Nuck_589 Jan 25, 2022 @ 11:01pm
No after signing in again everything is closed. Even the terminal window I opened before.

Maybe its a Problem with my Monitor?

So I found out that ubuntu crashes after ESO is opened in full screen. Sometimes the game opens in background and the Launcher sits in front of the real game. So I see the Zenimax intro and so on behind my launcher. But when I try to change to the game with Alt+Tab ubuntu is crashing.

did u tried to do window mode instead?
Nuck_589 Feb 2, 2022 @ 3:58am
I have no option to open ESO in window mode. I red you can just activate window mode when in the game

Go to ur ESO Live folder and check the UserSettings.txt
