Best 'In character' sets for a paladin tank?
Howdy guys. I'm looking for some ideas for a nice PVE maybe the Imperial city PVP paladin play.

My char is a imperial Templar and as I usually dont go for the hardcore stuff and focus more on fun and having my character make sense in the RP way (not a roleplayer though. Just want to have things seem logical).
So far I enjoy playing as a tank shielding hits, healing allies and smiting foes with 'holy' light. (fire weapon and solar barrage skill)

I Have the brands of Imperium set which I enjoy but want to find some other one which would fit my style. (I tried Ebony but I hate flashy visuals effect. Hate those red balls)

So any good sets which either give buffs, survivability, health or help me smite my enemies into a crispy bacon? And have no uggly effects?

Thanks in advance for any tips

Well, for raiding, I do use a raid set which includes Ebon. But for just doing vet dungeons, world bosses, and such:

* Bloodspawn set
* Bands Of Imperium set
* Plague Doctor set

All with the 'Sturdy' trait and 'Health' enchant.
Jewelry is 'Bracing' enchant and 'Health' trait.
64 Points into Stamina

Run about 40k health and 30k Stamina with food.

Note that this is NOT a DPS build in any way. It is designed to withstand a hit or two from a missed block or general non-blockable damage. It is pure defense and survivability.

Good Luck!

Thanks. I decided to give the Plague a try. So for now I am working on getting the imperium set with the right traits. That is going to take a while but I have fun playing this way. No orbs in my face is always better.

So thank you for your suggestions and tips. I might give it a spin

The easiest way to get the 'right' traits is to use the transmutation system to change the unwanted trait to the one you do want. Have to do some content to get the Crystals and be able to actually craft an item of the same level, weight, type, and trait.

But, it is worth it. A number of pieces in the sets I mentioned above were transmuted, and all improved to Gold. Crafting pays big dividends in ESO. :)
Couldn't stand the orbs on Ebon Armory. I was running that + Imperium but ehhhh.

Armory Slot system does make want to build a Templar Tank as a side slot since my Stamplar is a Nord with maxed Heavy Armor anyway and can swap builds easily.
First, templar isnt the best choice for a tank. If you want easier tanking I recommend to go for Dragon Knight, maybe Sorcerer or Warden. Necros are great, too, but mostly because of their buffs / debuffs but might be more diffifcult to play than the others.

If you really want to play a templar tank, a friend who does the same (a templar tank) was often using Plague Doctor ( https://eso-sets.com/set/plague-doctor ) / Torugs Pact ( https://eso-sets.com/set/torugs-pact ) with Ebony Armory ( https://eso-sets.com/set/ebon-armory ). I dont think that this is the best setup for a tank (because a tank should also be able to support the group) but for sure it is a setup that will at least work and allow you to do the basic stuff a tank has to do (stay alive). Such setup is also called egoistic setup, but a Tank who stays alive and taunts in an egoistic setup is still better than one in a support setup who dies.

The worst part about templars is their Sustain. It can be difficult but at least being an imperial helps. Another point to consider is that templar healer are very common, maybe even the most common healer class and they already give the buffs you would provide.

I myself do occasional tanking on my Sorcerer (buffs also wasted if there is a very rare Sorcerer healer or a really common Sorcerer Damage Dealer) and am using this gear:
Bloodspawn Monsterset: https://eso-sets.com/set/bloodspawn
Powerful Assault Jewelry + Backbar Frost Staff: https://eso-sets.com/set/powerful-assault
Perfected Yolnahkriin Body: https://eso-sets.com/set/perfected-claw-of-yolnahkriin
Perfected Puncturing Remedy Front Bar Sword and Shield: https://eso-sets.com/set/perfected-puncturing-remedy
For Trash / Adds, I want to replace Puncturing Remedy with perfected Void Bash ( https://eso-sets.com/set/perfected-void-bash ), but dint farm it yet.

Armor Glyphs: All prismatic defense (expensive, but best you can do for a tank or a PVP character, not optimal for PVE healers or damage dealers).
Armor + Shield Trait: Well fitted and Sturdy (Dodge Roll and Block Cost reduction)
Front Bar Weapon: Flexible, I am testing the decisve trait yet
Back Bar: Infused with Crusher Glyph
Jewelry: Infused with Reduced Skill Cost (Magicka, Stamina and Health)

This setup gives good group support, good sustain and survivability.

If you need more information, this ressource is really good for tanking: https://thetankclub.com/

About classes: https://thetankclub.com/eso-tank-class/
Beginner Builds for any class: https://thetankclub.com/eso-beginner-tank-build/
Several Dungeon Builds for any class: https://thetankclub.com/eso-dungeon-tank-build/
About the best tanking gear: https://thetankclub.com/eso-tank-sets/

Keep in mind that tanking is somehow individual and if you ask 10 tanks you will get 20 different answers / opinions. Still there are common basics you will see if you look at several guides / resources.

Some specific stuff for your request:
Equiping a destruction staff (usually frost) will allow you to spam instable wall of elements which does really good damage and also is able to apply the effect of the crusher glyph and status effects. This would allow you to do some good damage at trash.

But as a templar your puncturing strike should be able to do even more damage and is also good at single target. I wouldnt recommend to add more damage skills on a tank because otherwise you had to make a tradeoff at buffing the group, crowd control or taunting, survivability, self sustain / heal, which would be worse than doing less damage. And if you use something like Yolnakhriin and / or Powerful Assault you boost the damage of your group AND your own!

Keep in mind that you wont have any penetration and still do less damage (bosses have 18200 resistance) because of this, maybe using the sharpend trait front bar could help, if you really want to add as much damage as possible. Also you should always apply major and minor breach (single target: puncture and AOE: caltrops which would also trigger powerfull assault if you are using it).

Also you could use something like Dark Convergence ( https://eso-sets.com/set/dark-convergence ) which will add damage and give you crowd control effect or another Proc Damage Set (there are plenty 5 piece ones or monster sets). But most scale with Spell / Weapon damage which will be much lower on a tank than a damage dealer.

If you want to help your Teammates with sustain, you could use synergies. But keep in mind that using Spears + Orbs wont benefit your group much, because they share the same cooldown. Also using the Spear or Orb usually wont be benefit your group at all, because usually the healer is already providing this and the synergy of the Orb can be used multiple times, so one single Orb is all you need!

Also you could use something like Symphony of Blades ( https://eso-sets.com/set/symphony-of-blades ), but keep in mind that many healers are running this monsterset already and it wont stack, too. Another option is Sentinel of Rkugamz ( https://eso-sets.com/set/sentinel-of-rkugamz ), which will give your group sustain and will even add some healing to you or your group. But keep in mind that it has a really short radius and will usually only benefit yourself.

If you want to add Healing, then add one of the heals of the templar but keep in mind that due your low stats in Magicka and Spell Damage the output will be really low compared to a real healer.

Also you could use something like Chokethorn ( https://eso-sets.com/set/chokethorn ) or Earthgore ( https://eso-sets.com/set/earthgore ). It is only rarely used by healers.

I know Templar is not the best tank. I also know this build I'm going for is not the meta. or that imperial is not the best race for it. After all this character I made just for me to mess around and 'live' my life. Otherwise I have dedicated character as a healer and another one as a tank. But I do not enjoy running them that much as I'm forced to play certain way with specific items and skills.

For this build I want to play the way I enjoy the game. So a hybrid build of tank/healer. I might not be the best but at least in basic world stuff and dungeons it works well enough. taunting enemies, giving buffs and blocking the attacks. Just for fun.
Yet I don't want to be completely useless so thats why I was asking for a good replacement for Ebony which I hate with passion (ugly orbs) but have to run it when serious. Something with no visuals and helping with health, armor or regeneration.

I mean this character is supposed to be the most stereotypical Paladin ever. Bringing hope, light and courage to the fellow hearts, keeping them alive with his shield and healing and smiting enemies with holy light. Thats why I decided for templar. As there are some 'holy-light' skills. Also why I use only radiant ward from the spear ability line.

And before you say anything: don't worry. If I decide to run some hardcore endstuff I would switch to proper gear to do the stuff.

Thanks for all the tips though. Always appreciated
I tried to give you later some other tips, I hope you have read them, too.

The thing is that a Tank / DD or Tank / Healer hybrid is more difficult and will always perform bad or at best mediocre because you wont have the stats to survive / sustain yourself or you wont have the stats to do good healing or damage.

You have basically two options. Relying on Procs (for example of the mentioned Monstersets) or you will primarily build a Healer / DD which is able to tank somehow.

For easier content, almost any DD / Healer with a basic Taunt and about 30k Health could fullfill that, especially with 1 heavy armor piece at chest and the major resolve buff.

If you want to make your hybrid build strong enough to do even more difficult content this could get difficult, but 2 things could help:

1. Skills which give you a shield.
2. Dodge Rolling (mitigateing damage completely), but this is a difficult play style that might get hard to master. It wont be easy to sustain it and if you miss it once, you will be dead and your group probably wiped.

I recommend you install Code's Combat Alerts, if you havent done so already: https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info1855-CodesCombatAlerts.html

It will help you in general and especially in dodge rolling. But a few stuff have to be still blocked, a strong shield and high block mitigation could help in such situations.

A Magicka DD / Healer hybrid is easier to build, because both need the same stats.
Thank you all for your tips and ideas. All of it is well appreciated and I read it whole of course. As Imentioned before. This character is not ment for serious play. More to have fun. So I do not really care if its mediocre as for hard stuff I have other sets and mostly better suited chars. (I'm still finding the best setup which I will enjoy so I experiment with different skills and gears, traits)

But Yeah I got some ideas for sets I could go for and try them out. So thank you all a lot.

Well if you just want to have a load of solo mode fun then I really enjoy playing a 2H Warden and simply ripping through all the overland content. :)

Which is fine, my Nord Templar isn't the top meta DPS choice either lol.

Ebon is ugly orbs, I am absolutely on your boat here.
So for sets, I might use Plague Doctor over Ebon, and Imperium set is just fun to drop damage shields for yourself + group. Imperium + Radiant Ward + Reinforced (Warfare CP) is constant, fat damage shield that Sorc tanks are familiar with. Because why not have an effective 55K health.
Restoring Light tree has heals, obviously, but also sustain:

1. Extended Ritual is nice to purge debuffs, and is a great heal-over-time that's really magic efficient. Healer doesn't always drop it. Also combines with Sacred Ground passive to block more damage.
2. Rune Focus, you can morph to restore Stamina or Magicka over time, whichever you want more. Its super useful imo, I use it sometimes on my Stamplar just for extra sustain. The armor buff helps a bit too but eh.
3. Radiant Aura / Repentance can get magickasteal or can turn mob corpses into great sustain + adds 15% regen to HP/Stam/Magic. Repentance is kinda useless in boss fights though. Magickasteal can also often be gotten via a healer but its pretty good when flying solo.

Dawn's Wrath, you would like Reflective Light: hits up to 3 enemies, and gives Major + Minor Prophecy to you and the group to keep Magicka crit rate spiked at all times. Good damage over time across 3 enemies. I use it on my Templar healer for support.
Solar Disturbance is a really interesting Ultimate as it inflicts Major Maim (which is rare, DK and Nightblade drops Minor maim) on a whole crowd for 10 secs and persists even if boss leaves radius.

literally the issue with Templar Tank is that healers are like 75% Templar and spread your same buffs. XD

Glad someone agrees with me on this and have understanding for me not wanting to run ultra meta stuff. For now I decided to run Plague instead of Ebony. Imperial is too much fun for me to drop. (Shields, shields for everyone).

Your other suggestions sounds fun as well. I might give them a try.

So, thank you very much. Your response was exactly what I was looking for.
