Those portals are random and are not visible on the map like other world events are.
the event is ongoing. the "community" aspect happens spontaneously INSIDE the portal.
and people are essentially trolling zone chat with fake locations.
putting it on the map would be a good compromise.
that's enough randomness rather than enquiring all over and wasting time running half the map looking for things that aren't there.
the pro-social aspects happen inside the thing. outside the thing? as i say, people trolling zone chats with fake locations and other nonsense while you just want to fulfill a daily endeavor.
