If I remember correctly, you get 8 character slots for a base profile, then one extra per new class expansion owned, and you can buy some more for Crowns premium currency). I think I now have 19 character slots or so.
You can play most of the game solo, even some group content can be soloed. The base game will give you hundreds of hours worth of content, but I would recommend buying the newest Gold Road collection, containing all previous chapters.
The subscription is more convenience than anything else. Some Crowns, unlimited storage in Crafting Bag, access to non-chapter DLC...
In other words, go for it, it is worth it. My recommendation would be to find a good player guild. A social one, friendly to newcomers.
