New MMORPGS?
So, serious question I've noticed most MMOS have been around for somewhere about 10 years that've got any content or really dedicated playerbase. Is this the expectation or is the industry waiting for the next big thing? What other games will replace giants like FFXIV, ESO, GW2? New World definitely was NOT it. Just trying to figure it out if I should go back to these older games or wait patiently for the new big thing. I love ESO, personally - just looking for some answers.

The general consensus is that MMOs are a dying breed... Stick with what you have.

Right now ESO seems to be the only one going strong. I haven't heard or had much negativity in ESO, but I've heard chapters of negativity and bad experiences from WoW GW2 and FFXIV.

MMO genre has been stagnant for awhile now with no end in sight.

FF14 easily competes with ESO in regards to content and playerbase.

GW2 is fine as well, but it could be so much more if their organization wasn't so dysfunctional on getting their stuff in order.

To be honest, the era of MMO is over, that's why new MMO games always hard to survive but those 10-years-over MMOs are still running. (Even UO that 27 years old MMO is still alive)
Find newcomers is not easy but once they stick on it, basically they never leave.

haha...

You didn't saw the negativity with the anniversary event (justified)

+ TESO do only 1 major dlc per year because the game is slowly dying, they put less assets in.

I imagine it's also tougher to entice MMO players that already invested countless hours into one of these older MMO's, and get them to start fresh in a brand new MMO and setting.
Unless a new MMO breaks the mold and offers something truly enticing, why would anyone switch?

Sad reality is that MMO's are dying out. No one is really interested in the genre anymore and the ones that are will always flock to the ones that have a respectable playerbase. FFXIV, WoW, ESO, SWTOR, New World, BDO, and GW2 as far as I know that have an above average player base that is not on Steam. Most people look at the steam player count and think an MMO is dead or dying but forget majority of people don't like the double log in it usually does and would rather download the launcher from the website than on Steam.

Most people I know who play MMOs are in a rotation of the big ones we already have, so sad to see but it is what it is.

MMOs, real MMOs (people who call Destiny an MMO are clowns imo, when do you see 20+ people in a zone outside of social areas)?

MMOs are also REALLY expensive to make and keep going. They aren't like some FPS where your only expense is re-purposing old code with a fresh paint job, and then running some multiplayer servers. The fact it even keeps releasing expansions shows that an MMO is still going strong enough to generate profit.

For ESO it is important to keep in mind that it isn't just Steam. Hell, it isn't even just PC. Given that console support is continued I do imagine they have healthy enough population to warrant the servers staying up.

Yes but in the end they get to play on their own server, so it doesn't have that same impact as having Xbox, PS, Steam, PC players get to play on same servers and can see each other (if they are on same region) like in FFXIV

F I N A L F A N T A S Y XIV

It is much better than this game, in every single way,
Millions of players, and a lot more Content for all types of players.

and is it is even completely FREE as a Trial Account.

with no Pay-to-Win.

I like FF better but can't agree with the pay to win stuff. You don't need or require a sub for ESO.

FF requires a sub and each extra retainer costs 2 dollars extra a month.

You actually need the extra retainers in FF. It's not optional if you want to sell a reasonable amount of stuff, do crafting and sending them on ventures. You don't need the sub on ESO because there are plenty of ways around it.

Developing a MMO is just so much more expensive then any other live service game.

And MMO´s nowadays suffer from brain dead content. You don´t need to think in FFXIV or ESO while doing quests, using 1 skill gets you through the whole game. Which makes them very unattractive to a lot of people.

Yes there is challenge after 200h. But a game is terrible if it needs so much time to offer engaging gameplay.

I am not a fan of souls like, but just smashing 1 button is mobile gameplay.

GW3 is in development.

MMO's are dying ! People simply will not spend good money on games where they get told to go away cos they are not playing the right ? way or they walk into a room and get jumped on by a couple of poisonous ganks ! .. I have played ESO for several years now , BUT I refuse to play anything but SOLO .. Groups CAN be great fun ,, but far too many self entitled self obsessed pratts think that THEY OWN THE GAME .. Fine you own it >?You have it ! nobody else wants to have anything to do with you ! ... Why are MMO's dying ? Self obsessed little hitlers that want to tell everyone else what to do and how to think ! ..
