Cannot end task, or get the game to play
So I can't get the game to run properly at all, lmfao.

- I've tried to end the game through the Steam Library. It gets stuck on ending the process.
- I've tried ending the process in the task manager, it will not end the process. lol
- I've tried opening the launcher and without the launcher outside of the steam program, same thing.
- If I run just the game itself (eso64 or something) it will load the game, but sit on a black screen. It then attempts to crash, but stays in a crash state... never ending its process. This now keeps a screen up with no way of ending the process, even through task manager.
- All drivers are up-to-date.

This ♥♥♥♥ is weird, IDK WTF is going on. I've played ESO before but obviously wanted to hop back on after awhile to check the new expo. And bam, I'm getting this ♥♥♥♥.

For anyone curious, the eso64.exe file was corrupt somehow. Even after reinstalling twice. I noticed the image icon for it was broken, and thought that was weird. Deleted the file, ran a repair from the launcher, and works perfectly fine.

Yeah, it's been quite a messy launch but I'm glad you found a fix! Hopefully there will be fixes out soon for the black screens, freezing and crashes.

I'm running into the exact same issue. Installed ESO, failed to launch multiple times. Repaired files, failed to launch. Try to terminate the task, it just gives a middle finger to task manager. Tried to terminate branched processes, says I don't have permission despite running task manager as administrator. Manually give my account all permissions to the process itself. Can't terminate because I don't have permission. Uninstall. Reinstall. Download finishes but theres a steam error when it finishes. Can't finish downloading. No idea what to do anymore.

Yup, I'm running into the exact same issue. Did a full clean re-install, freezes immediately on launch and I can't kill it, have to restart my machine. Super annoying.

Also having same issue. Tried re-installing the game, repairing, tried all the youtube suggestions, ect..... Nothing is working. Press play in steam, launcher loads up, press play and nothing happens. cant end the task or anything, just stops responding. Have to restart pc for it to actually stop. Would really be nice if we could get this fixed.

I just fixed mine.

The game has a separate data folder in Documents
"C:\Users\${YOUR_USER_NAME}\OneDrive\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online"

I had a bunch of corrupted files in there, I couldn't even delete them normally.
So I opened up an Admin Powershell and deleted the entire folders contents (there is a "live" subfolder)

cd "C:\Users\${YOUR_USER_NAME}\OneDrive\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online"
rm -r ./live

Game booted up just fine after that. Hope this helps anyone facing this issue in future

game does not have a separate data folder.

game writes to folder
Documents\Elder Scrolls Online

windows one drive moves any files into windows one drive folders.
turn OFF one drive. uninstall it if not needed.

or if you need one drive, should be exclusion/exception option.
exclude the games Documents folder or tell one drive to leave a local copy of the files

details in the one drive user manual

Both of your are amazing. It was the one drive ♥♥♥♥. I deleted the one drive folder, turned the sync off and works like a charm. Thank you

This was also an issue for me, it is amasing that it do not throw an error, even cannot kill it with taskmgr.... after removing onedrive starts fine

game launcher writes your settiings/graphics settings to file UserSettings.txt in folder
Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live
game tries to read that file but One Drive has moved it from the Documents folder
to folder One Drive\Documents. game has no file to read.

if you do not use one drive, disable/uninstall it. one drive moves ALL files from the Documents folder so other apps may be affected.

if you do use windows one drive,
Windows One Drive was released in 2007. VERY many websites with
tutorials/manuals/movies/youtube videos written by experts devoted to
One Drive/synching files/using steam, etc. consult a tutorial/manual/video
and learn how to exclude folders, leave a local copy of the data, or other options.
