"I just dont seem to understand how to make them "known""
Traits can take from a couple of hours to weeks to research depending on how many you've already researched on that particular item type.
As you run around in the overland zones, you come across crafting stations. If you select them, you'll see that they have a special name associated with them, like Ashen Grip or Law of Julianos. There is also a number indicating the number of traits you must know in order to craft a piece of that set.
Julianos requires that you know 6 traits. It doesn't matter which six. If you have 6 traits learned for lighnting staves, you can make a lightning staff of julianos. However, if you only have 4 traits known for inferno staff, even though you are able to make a julianos lightninig staff, you cannot do an inferno until that also has 6 traits learned.
Whether you are able to craft a set or not, you can see what the 2,3,4,5 set piece bonuses are. Or you can just look them all up online. There are also several addons that put the crafting stations for every set on your map for you.
