The Elder Scrolls Online
Is it hard to start playing this game now as a new player?
What the title says, i just bought the game and i'm wondering what the community thinks, is it easy or hard or somewhere in between, for a new player to start this late in the game.

The game has been made easier and more accessible over the years for new and returning players.

It isn't even the most complex MMO out there. What could potentially be seen as a problem to new players are the Champion Points, but they have nothing to do with the player's proficiency at the game.

It doesn't have a steep learning curve. Try the different classes, see which you like. All I would say is to practise weaving since it helps you do more damage.
If I could recommend one thing to any new player.
Do the tutorial, then immediately go to do the main quest tutorial. The original one from the game launch.
Do zone completions before moving to the next region and stick to one region at a time. There is so much content in the game that it can feel very overwhelming for new players.
With that said, just stick to the original story before branching out to DLC. I think you'll enjoy it much more at that rate.

If you do end up really enjoying the game, I'd recommend the subscription. If only for the crafting bag, but it offers so much more at a good price.

Someone correct on me on this, but when the OP makes the first character it will automatically put them in the tutorial. Only characters created after that have the option to skip it.

Uhhhh no, while this might be how you like to play, me and all the people I play with prefer moving around from zone to zone, it's a big world to explore, you can do quests in any order and that's one of the selling points of ESO, when you want a change of scenery you can get one.

Yes, and it won't be the main game tutorial it will be current expansion tutorial or the latest expansion they own.

You start at the beginning and should follow the main story quest line which has been the core of the game since release. Class doesn't matter (I'd avoid stealth builds at first because they are more difficult early on), just pick whichever one appeals to you. Classes are very flexible so you aren't locked into being a caster or melee character. PvP is not good so avoid it until you've played a lot of the game content which is hundreds of hours. Look here for how to proceed in the main base game quest to avoid being distracted.

some useful tidbits, thanks for the response.

PvP is the main endgame, as one can see from the 3 full length cinematics that launched with the game, and is quite good on NA. EU and console are waiting for a server upgrade, which should happen early next year.

They have added plenty of PvE content for less competitive players to enjoy as well.
1. PvP is terrible and an unbalanced mess. You'll understand once you "experience" it

2. The game's economy is bad and will require grinding to participate in it

3. Most content is not challenging.

If you can stomach all three it's not hard to start playing.
Skilled players will find that making gold is easy, that PvP is fun, and that they can participate in the challenging content.
you all have given me lots to think about, i appreciate the time and effort.
:use: This is old, but there are other posts listing the quests in chronological order...

:Molag: This animated video is pretty interesting, it shows how deep Elder Scrolls lore goes & it only covers the Septim empire...

The game is huge, the devs make strange updates choices, but for the money - it's an incredible amount of content. Graphically speaking it's still pretty solid for it's age, which makes it accessible to older machines/GPU's.

you can create 9 free characters, that can have 200 store spaces each = 1800 storage spaces. 1 character you play, the other 8 for storage, place them in a big city, beetween a bank, and a stable master to easily upgrade them, and manage you storage. With good management like put all plant in 1 character, weapons and armor on another characters... you have more than enough storage spaces. For the 9 character, 3 per alliances, and 8 different races, if you want to get all 8 free Inn room across the map. At start of game it help, because you can fast travel around the map for free, until you have enough wayshrine open to travel all acrross the map! 9 character 200 spaces each, it took me around 6 month, but I have put all gold I earn on that! And if 9 character is not enough, you can buy 10 more at crown store. Buy on rebate, samething for crown, or dlc! For me, it is better than sub eso +, because it is yours.

this sounds usefull, thanks for the tip, i'll try this.

i'll look into these, thanks!

some good stuff here... keep them coming! i'll take all the tips i can get! :steamhappy:
:retreat: This might be too much info & it is just my opinion....
SOME NEW PLAYER TIPS:
1.) Have a friend craft training gear for you IF you want to grind levels.
2.) At level 6 - Daily Crafting Writs can earn gold & experience - talk to Millenith & Danel Telleno.
3.) Visit the STABLE everyday to get your riding skills up, once eligible for mounts.
4.) Vivec City is the easiest to navigate for most new players.
5.) Upgrade your inventory (BAG SPACE VENDOR) & bank space (BANK) as often as you can afford.
6.) At level 10 = Press L, queue for Cyrodiil - Do the tutorial in Cyrodiil (Do Not Skip it).
Once you complete the tutorials make sure to get the ASSAULT passive skill = CONTINUOUS ATTACK!!!
This skill will increase your mount speed by 30%
7.) Start doing DAILY DUNGEONS asap - press P then QUEUE.
8.) Join a trading guild that has a vendor - look at the guilds RECENT SALES to get ideas what makes $$$
9.) Google Tamriel Trade Centre - if you want gold this is a critical website.
10.) There are TONS of ADD-ONs - but if you only get ONE add-on = get Votan's Mini Map (Google it).
Just check your My Docs/Elder Scrolls/live/AddOns folder ... drop the addon folder there.
You can config the mini-map ADD-ON to remain on in combat.
11.) Learn about SEALS OF ENDEAVOR - you can earn them each day/week - you can get very cool stuff!
12.) ESO PLUS is worth it, but you can play the game without it if you control your inventory well.

KEEP IN MIND: You should be tweaking you GUI settings & combat options to your preference. ESO defaults to a very clean uninformative GUI. This is cool for lots of people, but most of us change the GUI info. ALSO...AddOns are life in ESO, you don't need dozens, but there is quite a few useful ones...just remember some AddOns break with each major update & need to be updated or re-installed. The more AddOns you use the more laggy your game 'may' become in PvP or TRIALS.

Goto Blackwood (buy the chapters if needed) and get your companion asap - they will make your solo life 100% better!
You can turn your companions into pocket healers, psuedo-tanks & mostly you won't yell at them for stupidly aggro'ing mobs, mostly. :steamhappy:

Have fun, hope this helps - I am a noob, my opinions reflect this. :Ebonheart:
