Leveling the skills will take 10 skillpoints per craft line, but you can incrementally level to 50 without ever investing points... It will just take about a year to do it. I have a level 50 crafter (mule alt) making tier 1 writs (iron/maple/etc) as I have no skillpoints for her.
Trait research will require max 4 skillpoints but technically can be done without skillpoints. Unfortunately, research timers will double with every trait finished, and you have to do it for each piece of equipment. That's 36 item types, 9 traits per (counting jewelry). The 9th trait will take 60 days unless you have the 4 skillpoints invested... and you will need to level the skill line before the research bonus can kick in so ultimately a lot of skillpoints invested to maximize research.
The choice is yours how many skillpoints to invest, but despite what it sounds like, if you plan to craft, I encourage you to start daily writs early. Even without points invested you will level slowly and at level 1 the writs pay for themselves. When you get more points, you can allocate them and unlock several levels at a time if you get that far.
Research you definitely start asap. If you can manage it, try to research high value traits first since the last one will take an age to complete. "High value" depends on who you ask (Nirn, infused, divines, impenetrable if it's me you're asking :) but some of those are not necessarily easy to find drops of. You could buy some or request help from guildies, but otherwise, just research anything you pick up that's you're not using.
If you need trait research help in PC NA, email @mreisse in game; I only charge for Nirn or jewelry research items :)
