The Elder Scrolls Online

Change Install Directory After Download
So I spent the 6 hours to download the game, downloaded it on my SSD, click play only to find out that it basically downloaded the install and now it had to actually install another 42 GB, I think this is terrible design but whatever, not having a second 42GB free on my SSD I want to install it on another drive, but there seems to be no way to change the install directory at this point WTF can i do? Also once this is installed is it safe to assume I can delete the first DL off my SSD?

Man ppl are fececious on these fourms, I've played plenty of PC games (I've built my own PC since gradeschool) I've played plenty of MMO's and there is no doubt that this is different.

Theres a pretty big differance between installing an mmo client and updating it and downloading a whole game and then installing it to a different directory that takes up almost as much space.

I've read many posts online asking how large the ESO game files are for non-steam users, and I see most ppl saying it was 30.4 GB, assuming the posts are outdated is that supposed to mean that there has been 50 GB of additional content added? I think not, it's just the way steam is handling the download, and whatever it's my fault for misreading the requirements and I'm dealing with it.

ppl on forums say that the install contains the EU and NA versions and the extra 40GB it installs will be one or the other but i dunno i stopped reading into it and just installed a new harddrive to put it on, apparently I had a 500GB that was totally empty just laying around.

Yeah , people are ♥♥♥♥♥ for no reason.
Except in the elderscrolls online, for some weird reason it's got an awesome community.

So, even after all those years, this still happens. I made 80 GB place on my disk for the game to download, but for installation it asked for another 87 GB which I had from nowhere to take... :steamsad:

I had a similar issue. Basically I cleared about 90GB on my SSD for the game and when Steam finished there was only about 20GB left on the drive. When I clicked Install in the ESO installer it wanted 87GB for install for some reason. So I cleared 150 GB and then it passed the check. But after it was done, my space only went down maybe 1-3GB. I think the installer has a bug in it since it doesn't know that the game files are already included so it thinks it has to download the entire game and complains.

Same issue here, but I have no more space in C: to free up. I'll try to move the installer to the HDD and then install it on the SSD. Incredible stupid system unfortunately.

Hi ArchMageDiablo,

It's recommanded to install The Elder Scrolls Online on your main Hard Disk, C://.
Once the installation is complete, you can move the files to another Hard Disk.

I was almost tempted to get a refund based on the simple fact that you can't choose your install directory. Every game on the PC since the dawn of gaming time has let you choose your install location. Geez. Hope this isn't indicative of other weird design choices in the game.
mathead 23 DIC 2017 a las 9:43
Funny enough, I found a solution by FUMBLING around. Yeah so the installer wanted to put the files in C instead of E, where Steam is. Stupid. And of course, C lacked the required 87GB. So I started install.exe from E -> same stupid result. So I clicked on zosSteamStarter.exe because who cares and voilà, the installer started and offered to install on E. Why? I'll probably never know but that worked and now it's installing as it should.

The system requirements told me 42 GB, it's not letting me access the store page to see if it says it there but I know for a fact that's what it said in DL location dialog. I have the hard drive space just not on the hard drive I downloaded it on. So ZOS, I downloaded the first 42GB on my C://, can I move those files to another drive, and install from there onto the C://, the installer seems to automatically want to install on the folder its sitting in and there no way I can get that much room on my SSD (C://)

Learn to read the store page.

System Requirements

Minimum:
OS: Windows XP 32-bit
Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: DirectX 9.0 compliant video card with 512MB of RAM (NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 / ATI Radeon™ 2600 or better)
DirectX: Version 9.0
Hard Drive: 80 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectX compatible sound card
Store page said 85 GB yet I needed double to install the game because it installs first through steam then through the launcher. Smart design.

My problem is, I have Steam set to download/install games to my storage drive (D:\).
I have now re-downloaded the 66.6gb "installer" 3 times, and every time I launch it from Steam, I get the ESO launcher/splash screen that says "Loading...", and I have to close it out via Task Manager.

When I navigate to the Steam install folder [ D:\Installation Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online ], and run the setup.exe, it'll run the Launcher Setup, but default to my C:\ drive, where my SSD has insufficient space.

I never had this problem the first time I installed.
I don't even have the choice to change install paths in the launcher.

And before you all tell me to move the setup files to the desired drive, it *already is in the desired drive path*.

It's beyond frustrating.
Eagleswind 23 ABR 2018 a las 18:23
After you have downloaded the entire game from Steam copy the entire Zenimax Online folder below to another drive. Example : D:\Zenimax Online\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\

After it copies over delete the folder and empty your recycle bin.

Run the setup.exe file in the Zenimax Online folder. i.e. D:\Zenimax Online\setup.exe

After it is complete copy the Zenimax Online back to the original location.

People on the first page really don't get the idea.. Once you downloaded the game and pop up the installation window, there is no option to select the installation path. It is different when you download the game directly from eso site. It seems like ESO launcher selected the same path you downloaded the game and lock it there.

I just submitted for a refund, gonna spend more money and get it directly from their website so I can chose my install path. This is more ridiculous than ET for NES.
Cyanmurder 5 FEB 2020 a las 13:16
cough..10TB of space, I hope I got enough space for it.
