Game has not changed significantly in 5 years.
And Zenimax still plays the same old games.
Half of the raiding community just died last patch. PUG raiding is almost non existent compared to before and guilds / raiding communities often have problems to find replacements. More of such content is out of reach for more people than ever before.
The solo content is ultimatively laughable easy and meaningless even more so now than before. Maybe you still played at a time before it got so laughable?
4 group content is more toxic than it ever was. The queue times are often insane long, if the queing isn't completely broken again, and most of the time you just get rusher, flamers and other idiots. Also there were always bad players but now it's less easier to carry them what yields to more toxicity because people leave groups or kick players more often than before.
Most of that happend because of the accessibility patch 35 🤣...
But you have the crown store! You get every week new even more colorful stuff to buy for even more crowns / money than before! Making the game look more and more like Disneyland than what it once was...
Maybe you remember expansions like summerset, Morrowind and Elseweyer. The last 3 expansions were jokes compared to those before. We just got boring Minigames and more of: just grind to complete your collection of meaningless worthless stuff with decreased amount of real content...
Even not talking about pvp which is almost dead (almost no players) but still is more laggy / wonky than it ever was with probably the worst balance the game ever had...
The game is in my opinion in the worst state it ever was...
But since you havent played for a long time, there were also some positive changes meanwhile like the sticker book which allows you to recreate once farmed gear so you don't have to collect items you maybe will need anytime in the future, just deconstruct it and recreate it if you really need it.
Then there are the curated drops that allows you to get sets easier together.
Also achievements are now accountwide so you can play altos without the need to replay everything again if achievement completion matters for you.
But even because this 3 are big quality of live improvements as a complete beginner you won't be able to keep up with veteran players that easy or at all because the game is already giant and growing further (good for veterans, who are leaving because of all the other issues, bad for newcomers who won't be able to keep up).
Nonetheless it's probably still the / one of the best MMOs and not dead yet, but seeing how the game is treated I wouldn't be surprised if the game will die out slowly over the next 2 - 3 years.
If you want this to be your comfort game and invest time on it? No.
For a few years now the devs have no idea what balance they want on combat so it's pretty unstable in terms of the stats for skills and item sets. Something will get nerfed or buffed or buffed and nerfed soon after. It definitely feels like you can't stick with one character build for more that a few months until you'll need to consider changing it.
The story for the past few years also has been kinda lacking and some are even stolen from older TES games. For example, Greymoor stole the story beats of Dawnguard; Blackwood stole the concept of Oblivion and even some of the story beats. Plus, it's customary these days that every new zone releases comes with the same bugs that plagued the previous releases and somehow it'll still takes quite a while for the devs to fix most of them.
It'll probably still be fun for new players but the devs seems to ignore old/veteran players for some reason. Thanks to that, if you stayed for the long run you might feel that you're hated by the devs at one point.
For years I stooded with the "TESO is awesome, give it a chance" crowd, then over the past years I´ve being leaning more into the "well the game has problems, and they need to fix them, but depending on what you´re looking for it may be worth it"...
Just today I just pass the "please free me from this game" state. I just wanted to create a plant furniture for one of my houses, a recipe from the new area, and turns out I need a special material from the new zone that only drops from Daily World Boss in that area, not always, and there are threads in the official forum complaining about this particular matter because the drop chance is ABYSMALL.
And then I started to think about how every chapter has several of this new style materials, that unless you do decorations or for writs, they are worthless, and yet I have a character just meant to hold them all, she can´t carry anything else but the thousands of style materials with hardly any real use. And the more I think about it, the more I realise the entire game is like that now.
People no longer goes to do stuff in older chapter zones because the money you can get from those materials have decreased way to much to make it worthwhile, and with drops for furniture, special materials or unique stuff is so low, plus you can collect the entire zone sets in just a few days, why is there to do unless there are events?? And so here we are, in a game that hardly has weeks without events that amount to nothing because the rewards are just style pages and cosmetic stuff that maybe some of us have no care for it. I don´t need to collect a thousand more suits and styles when I already 9 characters that I already spend time crafting their looks, and not feeling in the mood to chance them just because they keep realising cosmetic stuff rather than content.
And then there´s the people... CPs 2000 doing dungeon DLC vet on fake roles and with no knowledge of mechanics... back when I started people will kick you from a dungeon even if they didn´t like your level, or the moment you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up... hell the first time I entered vCOA2 they told me it was rush run and to show them my HM achievement, told them I didn´t had it and kicked... and I miss those days where people didn´t want their time wasted, fake roles didn´t exist and even on nICP people will drop because the possibilty of not being able to complete it was there and everyone hated that dungeon... now I can do it on vet alone hardly paying attention and half the mechs are gone and changed to be more automatic (oh no worries, now the ghost Lord Warden´s you can actually hit, jyou just don´t do that much damage... oh no worries, we will activate the synergy when you fall automatically, because we cannot trust you to push a botton).
Game is just trash, the content has become trash, the questing is trash (used to be good, but frankly I can´t think about a single quest I really enjoyed after Elsweyr), their additions are trash (companions that are caped and have the IA of a mule? a card game? a new trial that is basically a new mesh of older enemies?), latest DLCs are trash in all senses, predatory microtransactions becoming more and more expensive just so that now that Microsft forced them into endevours you have to grind like a motherf***r for a non combat pet crab... even the stuff that was chill and just for fun like decorating a house has become into an overly expensive grind.
Roleplayers are gone, PVPers are gone, most end-gamers are gone, and the whole thing is being designed for casual noobs and whales willing to spend 200€ per month on crown crates because they have a gambling problem.
This game is effectively dead, and we are witnessing it´s corpsing roatting slowly. So no, save yourself and don´t come back.
