Not enough free space for Zenimax - linux / proton
I am reinstalling ESO on Arch and suddenly I get an error from the launcher that I only have 3GB free space for the Zenimax installation... I have a 2TB nvme. I had this installed on the same machine before, it's the reinstall since the drive upgrade giving me issues. Any thoughts?

I think I saw a post about game installer having issues with VFS. I can't seem to find it and don't know if there was a solution in the thread. Not much help I know, but maybe you can find it.

I have the same error running btrfs and definitely enough space. The weird thing is the path
Z:/home/user/.local/steam/steamapps/common/Zenimax Online

Why does it pick Z? That is not the disk Steam is installed on and even so it has enough space too. Also can not change the path / disk.
Running Manjaro Linux
Same. Have you found a fix yet?

Switching to Proton 5.0-10 solved the wrong free space determination. That maybe solves the problem for you.
Not in my case because I use seperate disks for / and /home and it still uses the wrong disk.

That worked, thank you!

Didn't work for me. Tried an older version of Proton and this time it gave me an error that the installation path wasn't writable. Checked all directories/files, but everything's set to read/write/execute for all users.

I'm now trying to install the game to my home folder, if this works I'll try to move the installation files to my other Steam Library location.

So, I was able to install the game with Proton 4.11-13 into my home directory. When everything was updated I switched back to the latest version of Proton and everything seems to be working fine. I also noticed it runs much smoother with Proton than with Lutris.

After that I just had to move the installation files to the other Steam Library and re-installed the game again. It automatically checked the game files and restored my installation.

All good now. :)

Thanks for the hint. I reinstalled the game to another disk with Proton 4.11-13 and it runs fine. Will try 5.13 later.

I cannot get past this point. I am completely stuck. Thought I went through the everything and made sure it was all read/write, but maybe I am missing something? A file or directory? No idea.

It probably tries to install to / . You shouldn't change permissions for directories in / . I installed ESO to a seperate disk with its own Steam library.

If you don't have a disk left you can create a partition or try to reinstall ESO to a directory in your home with its own Steam library. Like /home/kosmicknight/ESO .

Maybe you can also create a virtual disk and install ESO into that. Be careful if you are so familiar with a terminal.

I am trying to install it on a separate disk with its own library. Cannot do home as there is just not enough room. it is terribly frustrating as I had this working a year or so ago when there was a free week of play.

As good as the game sounds, it doesn't seem worth the trouble if the updates make the game no longer function well in Proton.

In any case, I'd like to tell new players on Linux that to install the game without the black screen, run it the first time using Proton 4.11-13.

I haven't gone beyond the point of the HDD space requirements since the game detects that my 331 GB free space is just 11 GB available. I guess the game doesn't support multiple drives and insists on installing it in the first drive it detects.

EDIT:

I think I figured out why the installer is choosing the first drive.

1. Go to your Wine configuration and change the path from / to your $home folder or the folder where you want the installer to detect your preferred install drive.

Not sure if I can post images here but try this.

Use
PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
launch option for the game to point Proton to proper drive.

That option also only needs to be used for the very first start up. After that you can remove it (in my case I replaced with my go to of 'gamemoderun %command%' and it runs beautifully).
