More magicka = more damage.
You can check some builds on google, they're usually listing where the needed set/item drops.
Luckyghost has very decent builds, Alcasthq is more for trials min-maxing.
It has also been viable (and actually best) to put all points into your main attribute. The reason is that almost all skills that are based on that attribute, get better the higher that attribute is. As a crude example: Putting points into health may _seem_ to increase survivability, but it actually makes all your magicka-based skills weaker. You'll do less damage, so fights take longer, so you're taking more damage, which outweighs the benefit of having more health. Additionally, your healing spells will all be less powerful, which also outweighs the benefit of having more base health.
You only need to put points into health if you're playing in groups as a dedicated tank. For anything else, you only need to have enough health to survive oneshot-attacks. And you get that without putting points into health - if you _do_ need more health at some point, you can get that through things like armor enchantments.
Up to 3 weeks ago, a point could be made that solo players benefit from spending around 20 points in health. There never was a consensus about this, but some theorycrafters advocated it. But the last update gave a massive increase to base health for all players. As a result, even these players have changed their stance. For example, LuckyGhost's popular solo builds had about 20 health points prior to the update, but they all use 0 health points now. There's simply no need.
The best gear in the game cannot be crafted. Crafting is good to provide decent starter or mid-range gear for every occasion - being a crafter makes your character very versatilem because you can completely change your build and will always have access to decent gear. But crafted gear is never best-in-slot. Crafted gear gives you a legs-up so that you can perform well while farming for the better gear.
You can do without crafting, and - if needed - buy crafted gear from guild traders or have a guild mate craft it for you. However, I recommend to not ignore crafting completely. Once you know which traits you want on your armor, research those. Otherwise, you will need to farm much longer for the endgame gear you want, because you won't be able to change the traits of the gear you find, you have to farm until it drops with your preferred trait already present.
pick a spammable skill, a healing/shield skill, a couple of buffs, a couple of dots(damage over time) and an AOE spammable. blam, you're good to go.
