FF14 is a deal breaker for anyone who doesn't want to pay for a subscription. Hint: FF14 requires a subscription to play in addition to buying the game and expansions. ESO does not.

If you don't care about the subscription fee, it'll come down to which universe you like better - for the most part.

FF14 has superior UI, control scheme and innovation. You also only need one character in FF14. One character can be any job (you have unlocked) by swapping out this badge/gem. It also has a superior end game. The cities are much livelier and prettier in FF14. The dungeon/event finder in FF14 is superior.

Sadly, I don't really care for the story line in FF14. I don't care for the world that much either. There are some events in FF14 that are almost impossible to find groups for - unless you like waiting most of the day.

ESO has superior lore/storyline. The world isn't as bland as FF14. ESO open world is livelier than FF14. Open world FF14 is dead in comparison.

The primary reasons I play ESO over FF14 is the lore/world and the subscription.

Mostly it's about the Universe the game take place in.
And the one you'de like.

FF is probably cool, but there's absolutly nothing that hook me there.
When in elder scroll I have many memory from older games.

In terms of content and freedom of choice, ESO is the best bang for your buck.

ESO.

My 2 cents. 1) ESO all voice acting FFXIV all reading 2) Music in ESO is relaxing and nice in the background FFXIV music is all over the place had to turn it off .
TL;DR : I would prefer FFXIV if only it didn't have that subscription fee. ESO in the meantime is enjoyed whenever you feel like coming back to it.

Long version:

1) ESO is one time payment for base game and then expansions are priced separately with older expansions relegated to crown store and thereby accessible to subscribers. FFXIV is all of the above AND a monthly subscription except you don't get access to years old content unless you buy em. They did add first content to free trial though, there is that.

2) ESO quests, whether side or main, have a lot more going on with different lore reveals and even funny interactions. FFXIV main quests were the biggest time sink I ever had to go through. And this is coming from a guy who had gotten Tournesol in the classic version of FFXII. It's just get this stuff from X or killing Y enemies and come back every single time.

3) ESO has a lot more respect for players' time as the quests generally don't ask you to run around talking to people and backtracking and never frontloads cutscenes about reiterating the stakes. Meanwhile FFXIV is all about that. The number of backtracks is crazy in this game. And the cutscene density! For every little thing! Oh yes lemme install this mcguffin you just brought while prattling about things you have already known for a long time. And now go bring another mcguffin so you can be treated to another cutscene! Not to mention the unskippable cutscene in trials if one among you is doing this for the first time. 15 minute gameplay and 55 total minutes of cutscene. No I'm not joking or exaggerating.

4) ESO gameplay is honestly drab with only magicka users getting some sort of flashy effect on their skills. With stamina users getting basic generic slash or stab in many of their skill activations. Sure I'm told this slash differs from regular slashes by doing more damage but that's about it. FFXIV has flashy skills that lets you know what your teammates are using with flashy effects accompanying them so that you won't ever mistake a regular attack from a skill activation.

5) This may be controversial, but I honestly don't like ESO's light attack weaving. It makes you sweaty and it's required of you if you're a DPS. FFXIV just asks mastery of general rotation and positioning which is more fun than animation cancelling and LA weaving, or so I believe. I have 1.2 hours in ESO and I have always had a miserable sweaty time LA weaving in trials and vet dungeons while contending with 200+ ping and enemy skill dodging or blocking.

6) ESO characters you meet are generic and forgettable. Plenty of times I have come across them in expansions and I'm like 'who?'. Of course notable exceptions are Raz'umdar, Ayrenn and the broseph himself, Rigurt the Brash.
FFXIV main characters pop out in comparison with their interactions and their unfortunate choice of clothes.

7) Both games have queuing for your daily dungeons. And the dungeon and mechanic variety is the kinda the same in both games..but only if you have access to all the DLC dungeons in ESO.

8) FFXIV has flying mounts and ESO doesn't. Enough said about that.

9) ESO's freedom of choosing skills is good on paper. But there are clearly superior skills that you must be using for every build making the so-called "choice" null and void for harder content. FFXIV skills are only gained as per their levels and jobs and might be restrictive at first glance. But nearly every skill has a caveat like how it does more damage when used after another skill or whether or not you are at the flank or rear of an enemy etc. So there is an appreciable depth in FFXIV skill choices.

EDIT : 10) How can I forget the level scaling? ESO enemies scale to whatever level you are. So whether you kill a wolf in intro area or the end game area, you get the same exp.
Whereas most of FF content I had to go through had been very underlevelled. Just from daily queues and random FATEs here and there.

ESO for me personally.
Had several attempts at getting into FF14 and there are just too many things I dislike.
But I'm a Western MMORPG style fan anyway, grew up with EQ1 and UO and the Asian style just isn't for me.

YT got some videos on the topic too.
I haven't watched any of them, but this one looks informative.

you come on an ESO forum and ask which game is better. Have you went to FF14 forums and ask which is better?
GRRz|Snake Jul 13, 2021 @ 1:27pm
FF14 is better.

Elder Scrolls single player series is better than ESO...

so if you wanna experience Elder Scrolls play the Single Player series... : Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

if you wanna play an MMORPG play either FF14 or WoW.

And people here are gonna be bias towards ESO because it's their forum but i'm telling you how it is...

- FF14 story is a snooze fest.
- People are weird weebs with the IQ of a slice of toast. (see Snake)
He literally thinks saying FF14 in an ESO forum automatically makes him right just because it's an ESO forum.

I think this video makes a few good points, though they all seem to forget that dialogues in ESO are STILL fully voice acted, something not even SWTOR can claim.
Then again, SWTOR voiced the player character as well, that's something not even ESO does.

Bottom line, the pros of ESO could be summed up as...
Western Style
Huge amount of freedom.
"Fully" voiced.
Unique PVP modes.
Unique gameplay options such as stealing or assassination missions.

and for FF14...
Asian Style
Very structured and "hand-holdy". (I just made that word up.)
