And I find Bastian comments annoying. He is patronizing.
Otherwise they are almost the same. Not very useful in combat, they are more a distraction for the ennemy and they need to be healed frequently
As all my characters are ranged mages (Nightblades and necromancers) I use Bastian as tank and Mirri as dual wield DD.
Bastian works the best as a long distance Healer. He never dies and buffs during fights with Shrikes and the like. Allot of success with comps relates to how you have skills setup and of course gear attributes. Some skills work at a longer distance than others so pay attention to that. The closer to the enemy the more they are going to need stuns.
Both of them constantly bug out and often more than not are useless HP drains.
For me, I found that it's their personality that I like or dislike the most. Also, the use of Medium armour makes them take boss aggro and keep aggro while constantly roll dodging out of the fight area and reset the boss, so medium armour bad. I really don't need constant life lessons from Bastion or wrong information constantly yelled out, like "the fight is over, put away your weapon," while he is standing in an aoe in the middle of a dark anchor. My favorite is him yelling "taste our steel" and we are both using a wooden staff. So he now sits on my back shelf, unused because I just can't stand his personality.
Mirri is happy about pretty much everything but stupid bugs, so stay away from looting bugs and your good to go.
Both are good at guild abilities like Starfall is awesome. So for me, I met a player who was a healer and i noticed Mirri looked like a healer and I asked, "is Mirri a good healer?" They replied she is an awesome healer. So to stop the aggro roll dodge thing even more I made her a healer and it has been working great. I use the staff, class and guild abilities and make her wine every now and then, take out a goblin, read a book, whatever, and we are getting along just great. So, for me it's more about personality than skills since it seems you can make them both into whatever you want.

They have different skills and different things which effects if they will follow you.
The skills mildly matter but what they like and dislike do add up.
