Non-combatant pets
Do non-combatant pets do anything except look good? I thought they might carry items but I'm not sure. I want to dismiss my pet but I don't want to permanently lose it.

They are only an extra, like the reskins for the horse, but the pets don't do nothing especial (they have specific animations) Just don't equip your pet, no need to delete or something else. If you want the pets that can carry your stuff, you can buy 2 of those, a pig and a rat in the crownstore.

they are more vanity thing, some of them are rewards for achievement, some show from how long player is playing, some show how many crowns player probably spend. even that pets that gives 5 inventory slots doesn't have to be equipped, it is enough to own them.

Just to clarify:

The pig and the rat do not literally carry your items, they simply each increase the maximum carrying capacity of each current or future character on your account on that platform/server, by 5 slots. If you have both, you can upgrade up to 210 slots.

This increase happens upon purchase of the pet, and you actually do not need to ever use the pet on even a single character.

Okay, it seems I can never have enough item slots since I am not an ESO+ player.

even without eso+ inventory can be managed, it takes time and gold. expanded(bought -pack merchant and mount training) max character slots is something like 200, bank 240, storage crates 1x30 obtained through lvl-ing, 3x30 and 3x60 obtained through crown store or in-game through tel var stones(imperial city) or master crafting writs(max crafting skill) + alt characters and bank used for crafting materials. also waiting for eso+ free days to transfer your crafting mats to crafting bag or taking from time to time eso+ which can be useful especially when lvl-ing crafting on character. and with upcoming update even armors wouldn't be necessary to keep all as they will be craftable (even now you can buy armors from guild merchants just some costs too much).

There are 8 storage crates, not 7. Four of each - 30 slots and 60 slots.

Upgrading your mounts stamina carrying capacity will also increase your characters inventory. As the people said above me, you can do master writs and turn them in for chests as well.

Edit: Mixed up Stamina and Carrying Capacity

Actually, upgrading your mounts' Stamina will do just that - give them more Stamina.

To get more bag slots, you need to increase their carrying capacity instead.

Apologies, I meant carrying capacity. Early morning for me, but thats not an excuse. I’ll edit my post but retain the mistake.

thanks for clarification, i was speaking by memory. after 1000+ hours and eso+ very rarely, only when i need crowns, i still didn't found reason to have all containers.

I am engaged in the true ESO endgame - housing and fashion. Especially housing requires lots and lots of storage. I also have a lot of gear set items I may not need storage for in the future. Yay!
