Aside from that you could use the ultimate from the dawn's wrath line, it does a lot of damage and allies can use synergy to do even more.
Other than that you can use healing / buffing skills. Another skill that you should use is the spear shards... its synergy gives back resources to allies and you will be loved for that. I don't think that's a part of the "advised" build so keep that in mind. And the morph can give back both magicka and stamina to allies
And the skill advisor is... meh... you don't really need to pay attention to it. You get a lot of skill points especially if you do a lot of quests so you can just unlock every skill from your class lines and level them up until level 4 so you can get the morph... you don't need to morph them but they will be there for you to use in the future... and you get familiar with all your skills that way. You can respec your skills at shrines in major cities and you also get a respec scroll as a level up rewards at around lvl 40-45 anyways so it's not like you lose anything from leveling all your skills
And of course you should also level your weapons, most importantly resto staff if you are healer... get familiar with the weapon skills too and see what difference the morphs make
And once you have all your class lines at 50 and skills ready to be morphed you can use the respec scroll to get back your skill points and just spend them on what you found useful for your role
Also, what do you recommend for secondary weapon, destro or dual wielding?
I have primary healing, and switch weapons to Aedric Spear. The weapon set is Transmutation on my current Templar, as I collected it before Jewelcrafting sets could be crafted.
I recommend using 1Hand+Shield when switching to DPS mode. You will be using your offensive spells, which don't really care what weapons you're using anyway. Not only can you increase your survivability through blocking well, but you have the benefits of two items enchants unlike when you are using your staff in healing mode.
I am currently crafting a Jewelry+Weapons set for my healer. The Seducer set is perfect as it is magika tailored, and the 5th set bonus is -8% cost of all spells. That will assist DPS provided you aren't using the stamina morphs.
My primary weapon is two-handed, skill bar has 2h damage skills + aedric (jabs since I don't really need the heals) + shards.
Weapon has a restore stam enchant so stam bar refills as you weave.
My secondary weapon is a resto staff, skill bar set up for heals and buffs.
I never use the staff as a weapon though - only for the skills.
Staff neverheless has a restore magica enchant - just in case.
I don't have a lot of magica, but i put a bunch of cp in magica recharge.
Works fine for solo pve. Unfortunately not specialized enough for group dungeons.
My other templar is a dedicated healer.
Currently exclusively uses resto staffs.
Great healer, but about the same dps as a stick insect.
I'm afraid you can't always have your cake and eat it too.
Also: equip armor sets that increase damage or crit damage/chance.
Yes, your total armor value will mitigate damage done to you. Blocking reduces this further or negates damage all together.
Blocking is also necessary to stop certain attacks. You can block with any weapon to reduce damage. Too many people fail to dodge boss attacks, and even more fail to block big waves of hurt they can't dodge out of. You don't have to be in Tank mode to block. Everybody should learn to do it at the right times.
The shield is going to greatly improve your total defense stats and ability to block. Also, certain items will be more potent when you enchant them. Helmet and Chest for example are waay more stat-worthy than Shoulder and Bracers. The enchants will be more potent on these pieces. Adding a shield lets you add a potent (defensive) gear enchant you would otherwise not have if using any kind of 2hander.
<Edit: Thus, since you offensive attacks will come from the Aedric Spear line, the 1H+Shield will ultimately increase your stats all around, and more so than another 2hander. The only reason why I don't use 1H+Shield to heal is because I mix my Templar abilities with the Restoration Staff abilities. There are also several bonuses, which you can read about in their descriptions (armor set bonus' or abilities) which involve using a staff. So of course I heal with a staff ... but just barely.>
