The Elder Scrolls Online

Just started and got a bounty???
So I took a break from my nightblade to try my hand at a sorcerer. Made my character, opened the door to start my adventures, opened the options to tweek the settings (why they don't save across all toons I'll never know).

All of the sudden I see my screen flash red like I was being attacked. I closed the menu to see wtf was going on, next thing I know, it tells me I have a bounty and the law will kill me on sight (which they did).

I ressurected at the waypoint but now have a bounty and I have done nothing but stand there setting my game options. I just started and have not even swung a weapon or cast a spell yet.

I can't even do anything now because I get attacked by guards for no reason.

Just to be clear, I have not cast a single spell, I have not even drawn my weapon. I litteraly took 3 steps outside the tower you end up in after the tutorial (which i skipped) and opened my options menu to reset my game settings.

What's the deal?? Thanks.

Not sure what tower you mean, but technically you can break the law by just standing in certain areas since you'll be considered a tresspasser.

Are you a filthy elf?

Damn elves.

You've ruined your own lands, you'll not ruin mine!

Boo scowls at you, ready to attack! What would you like your tombstone to say?

Minsc crushes YOU for 6000
Mincs kicks YOU for 500
Minsc crushes YOU for 7000
Minsc crushes YOU for 7000

You have been knocked unconcious.

Go for the eyes, boo, go for the eyes!

Boo bites YOU for 500

You have been slain by Boo.

Loading, please wait...

You were probably killed by a space hamster.

Although, the trespassing thing is also a plausible theory as well.

Since you mentioned that you played your sorcerer: In some instances the summoned pets attack towners if the towners are already fighting with another player, for example if they are hit by an AOE attack.

Some tips:
- Your bounty will decase over time, even when you are logged out. So if you don't want to escape and do something else where no guards are, you could just play on another character or stop playing for a while.
- You also get a bounty by attacking animals in towns since they belong to a towner.
- To make sure you don't get a bounty (other than through what Woob described) you can turn on something in your game settings to prevent you from being able to attack NPCs at all. I don't know how that option is called in particular since my game client is set to German.

I understand the imp can attack, but like I said I never even cast a spell yet. I started at Khenarthi's Roost as a high elf.

I litterally took 3 steps out of the tower and did not even set my spells to the hotbar yet, I never even chose a starting weapon to equip.

There was some idiot attacking guards when i exited the options menu to see why my screen was showing me being attacked, but I never lifted a finger or anything...wierd.

I will have to look in options for the "not attack npcs" setting as I have just started over since I was only level 2.......thanks for the advice, just wierd I got a bounty and not even had a weapon equipted or cast a spell.....hmmmm

It's probably a moot point now, since this was a few days ago and you've already started a new character. But I'm curious, just to clarify: do you mean you still had a bounty after you resurrected? I didn't know that could happen... I always thought dying cleared your bounty, because that's what has always happened for me.

Run, look for walls to jump over, water to run into. Guards lock you down - dodge-roll out of lockdown.

Yep, still had a bounty after respawn too. (90 I think it was)

Like I said, I didn't even get any spells ready on the hotbar yet so there was no accidental attacking NPC's. Just standing there tweeking my settings when some idiot decided to attack a guard.

It was a wierd occurance and lucky I was only at lvl 2 so I just started over. I made sure I set the options to not hit NPC's and so far so good on my new sorcerer.

:)

Bounty only clears on death if you have enough gold to pay it off.
If you don't, or have no gold, then your bounty persists after death.

There is a setting in "gamepley" that lets you not kill innocents, if you're not a Thief oR Dark Brotherhood member just go ahead and click it to prevent accidental attacks on NPCs. All of my toons are murderous thieves so I kill a lot of them.

It is easy to accidently steal stuff and get a bounty too. A couple of times a month I rush through turning in my writs and accidently steal something next to the turn in chest...luckily I'm a Thieves Guild member so it isn't a big deal. Clemency!!!

Sometimes Johnny Law gets it wrong. Random attacks from guards do happen. Bug. Plenty of threads about it in the past.

Also, fyi: if you use a spell to heal another player who is being chased by guards, the guards will turn hostile on you as well.

Thank you, this is really useful information. I guess I've always just had enough gold, but it's good to know.

I love how you waste all your time writing this whole paragraph when you could of asked a guildie or kill some mobs do get gold to pay off you small bounty. People like you i laugh at. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ dropped on your head or what. Just pay it off and get over it instead of writing all this ♥♥♥♥ just to get no where.

Some people, like me, like to understand the game mechanics so that:
A: It doesnt happen to them again
or
B: so that they may be able to reproduce that action again.
