Downloaded 87 GB Game, gives me ESO installer to re-install game when I click "Play".
I recently bought the gold edition of ESO on my Mac. I downloaded the game for 11 hours and my computer lists that I have 87 GB installed. When I click "Play" on Steam, the ESO installer opens and tells me that I need to install the game, as If I hadn't spent all night already downloading it!

I don't have the necessary space to install the game twice and I've spent an hour and a half trying to figure out how to solve this issue, to no avail. Can anyone help me?

When downloading Steam version of ESO, steam is screwed up in thinking it needs DOUBLE the download space. Steam needs to see about 160 Gb on your C drive. Steam will Never use the extra free space, but it thinks so, Game is under 80 Gb. If under 2 hours on play clock you can refund and buy this MMO from ESO website. Steam is not required to run game.

Unfortunately that's really not an option for me. All the funds I can afford to spend on gaming right now are in my Steam Wallet, therefore I can't go buy the game from the ESO website. I really want to play this game and would hate to have to refund it (though I still can If i want to).

Your theory is the first one I've seen of It's kind. My friends have the steam version of the game and they didn't encounter this issue, it can't be what you said.

Does anyone know if uninstalling the game and re-downloading it would work?

It is possible to download the game if you link your steam account to an ESO account and download the game directly from the site. That is what I did and the game has only taken 80GB instead of the 160 required by steam.

I've considered that idea. However I am unable to even log in to my steam game because It wants me to install it twice. I can't connect my steam account to my ESO account because of that. Is there a method of doing it without the launcher that I'm unaware of?

I'm currently re-downloading the game on steam to see if that might solve the issue, but I don't expect it to.

Thank you to everyone who responds. Your input and help is incredibly important to me.

Here's what you want to do.

  1. Install the game through steam.
  2. Run the game, let the ESO installer do its thing until it looks like it sort of gets stuck halfway through "updating".
  3. Force exit the ESO installer via task manager (right click > end task)
  4. Run ESO again, the launcher should now pop up and start doing actual updates of which you actually see download progress.

When everything's done, you should be able to play the game just fine.

^ Doesn't work if you don't have that 170 GB free space. Launcher opens then says I don't have enough space so can't do anything else.

That's right, I forgot about that. Ideally you'd just uninstall stuff to free up space for the time being. It's what I before I got my SSD and started using my HDD for anything that doesn't benefit from SSD speeds.

If OP has an SSD and an HDD with unused partitions, they could install it there. ESO has always ran fine from HDD, at least for me.

I'll finish reinstalling the game on steam in about an hour. If the issue is still present, I'll move the files to my external hard drive and do the ESO install on that. Hopefully It'll work then. Another forum stated that the issue may continue even at that point. If so, I'll attempt to install the game on my other mac just see if it works.

My last ditch attempt would be to install it on my friend's pc. Though by that point I would have eclipsed the 2 hours refund policy of steam trying to use the ESO installer.

EDIT: Does anyone know how I can get in touch with the developers of customer support to aid me with this issue?

Do you have the same issue?

I wouldn't install it on an external drive. Games never work well running from those. Makes sure it's an internal drive connected to your motherboard.

Best way of "fixing" the problem is just making sure you have twice the amount of space you need, then just doing what I described. Works every time for me. I don't think customer support will be able to do much for you.

I managed to install it twice. It took only a few seconds actually and began to update the launcher. Now I have a new issue though, the launcher has updated and is now stuck saying "loading".

Loading? Does it show a progress bar it's stuck on while doing so? If so, you can just force exit it with task manager, then restart, it should start updating.

Oh, you're in Mac?

I recall someone stating that in Mac, they still download two versions of the game, both NA and EU versions (back when it wasn't mega servers), so maybe its that

No loading bar
