Report a translation problem
The drawback is that since maps can have more than one channel you might not see everyone on it because they're on a different one (and since it's dynamic you can't switch on your own).
The only counter to that is grouping. The game will always put group members on the same channel, so you just need to make a party.
Go to the Friends tab. Right click on the name and select "Travel to Player". It will put you in the same instance and at the nearest Wayshrine. It will help if your friend is already at that Wayshrine.
You can use the same technique if you are grouped by right clicking on their group line and selecting "Travel To Player".
IMPORTANT: Some areas of the game are 'Phased'. That means that they have to be progressed through in order for the next 'Phase' to be accessed. If you traveled as mentioned above, and you cannot see the friend, it is probably because he/she is further along in the story and you are in a different 'phase' of the area.
