They are defo both great games. I know this topic was necro'ed but honestly people asking which to get should alternate between both. Since they are both buy to play games there is no reason not to. Heck GW2 is free to play for the base game even.
Technically all free to play games are also free to play, but some have mechanics that make you whether want to pay or better leave instead of playing and ESO has some of them too, even not to such extreme degree like many free to play games.
But yeah, if you can / want to afford it, just try both. They are among the better / best MMOs available right now. I formyself dislike the "disney" / "happy bears" artstyle of guild wars and it seems to feel even more empty / meaningless than ESO somehow, while I like the more adult art style of ESO, even I like the more colorful newer zones more than the base game ones.
I don't always have ESO Plus. I generally get it when I'm a little more into the game than usual. Otherwise I play fine without it. If there is something I want in the crown store I'll get plus for the free crowns, then buy the rest of the crowns I need for the thing I want. I still think Plus is a good deal because it's the same price as just buying 1500 crowns, but you still get the crowns as well.
