New player - question about motifs
As the title says, I am a new player to the game (ignore the hours, mostly from having the launcher up all day). I am a former WoW player and loved transmogs, and with ESO in order to unlock pieces for outfits you need to learn the particular motif for that set. I am still a bit confused on pretty much everything regarding motifs. Where exactly do I get them? Currently I am doing the dark brotherhood quests and would like to unlock the pieces for DB but don't know the motif. Also, once I learn a motif, whether for the DB or something else, will the pieces that I had before receiving that particular motif be unlocked and viewable at an outfit station? I would hate to learn a motif and have to start over on getting the pieces.

Motifs allow you to make weapons and armor in 3 weights- light, medium and heavy. Motifs come from chests everywhere, but mostly from doing quests, buying from crown store-which is in-game store, can also buy motifs from guild traders. Do Dark Brotherhood quests and recieve motifs sometimes.

Outfit station allows you to cover up ugily dropped armor or weapons. Outfits unlock as you learn motifs.

When I get a DB motif, will I unlock the previous pieces of armor that I collected before receiving the motif?

You can preview everything at an outfit station, just uncheck the "hide locked" button if it's checked.

You can find the DB stuff from chapters that can be found in Desks, Dressers, Backpacks, Trunks, Nightstands & Wardrobes (In all zones) or by completing the Dark Brotherhood's Sacraments.

Site like this one can help you learn and find out stuff within ESO - https://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Elder+Scrolls+Online+Wiki

In my opinion the best way to obtain a motif you want is to just grind for gold instead and buy it from the guild stores.

Learning a motif will unlock the ability to make that item with the character it was used on. Now you also unlock a cosmetic/outfit version of that motif for all your characters when used.

Example: I used my DB bow motif on my wood elf warden. Only that wood elf warden can make the bow, but my other characters can use the outfit override version of it over at the outfit station.

So just so I'm clear, I have to learn the motif of a particular piece of armor, let's say shoulders for example, to be able to use it in an outfit, correct?
