If you have gold edition, then you can get the Imperial edition upgrade, the adventurer pack, the starter pack, aditional character slots, the Shadows of the hist DLC [2 dungeons], there are also some cool mounts for <2500 crowns, a 500 crown personality pack, some cheap vanity pets, and lastly the Elk mount for 4500 crowns.
If none of this suits your interest I'd recommend either saving the crowns for later updates to the crown store or buying consumables (Exp boost, motifs, mimic stones, riding lessons, bag upgrades...)
Buy the actual content, DLCs, etc.
First off, ESO+ is THE best thing you can buy. Just keep up with ESO+ sub, even if just for the 'craft bag' which you will find extremely invaluable. With the 1500 crowns (valued at just under the cost of an ESO+ sub anyway), you can purchase other stuff you will really want later game.
ESO+ gives you access to all DLC's and those yet to come. We don't know what it'll give extra for housing if anything, that might be straight crown purchase (may want to save crowns for mid February housing release)
Any race, Any faction - This will allow you to play any race, but stay in the faction of your choice (if you are a PVP fan, this will let you play multiple chars with your same pvp group).
Imperial edition - Gives you the imperial race, which is an ideal race for many builds, mostly stamina builds. You don't 'need' this, but later game, you're going to want to get every small advantage you can from a build, and Imperial will give you that.
Merchant & Banker - Having access to your bank anywhere (and giving you party access to theirs) can be very useful, as so much time is wasted traveling back and forth from merchants, or your bank. Your party will love you for it.
Likewise, the new Crates are a major RIP OFF, most players agree. your chances of getting ANYTHING useful from it a very slim, you could spend $200 and get nothing.
Crown XP scrolls are an option, but NOT for a first time player. The last thing you want to do is blast through levels. Everything in the game scales to your level, meaning if you are level 40 with crappy gear because you blasted through levels, everything will slaughter you. Do NOT power level your first char. Having said that, you DO want to make your first goal to reach CP160 (level 50, plus 160 champion levels after that). But do it slow pace, ungrading your gear, learning game mechanics.
NB: Until Jan 5th, the Festival event will be giving you a 100% xp boost to everything (not just mob kills), and you can also purchase 50% xp potions with 3300 in-game gold.
- Do not buy xp scrolls.
Yes, you can spend 45,000 gold bringing all your mount stats up over literally half a year of time (and that's if you don't forget a day), but some of us aren't that patient and want a jump start on those stats a bit sooner so it's not *that bad* to spend some on the mount bonuses if you know you're just doing it to speed yourself up and could otherwise earn them over 6 months time if you're on every day, paying 45,000 gold in the end for them. They are your crowns and your choice and it doesn't hurt to use them to skip part of the mount stat wait if you want :D
Although ever since they started to give you a craft item bag with the subscription, bag expansion isn't quite as badly needed if you have an active subscription.
I personally like some of the pets, and I collect "Rare" mounts that are only on sale for short amounts of time once and a while. It's cool to have a mount that a lot of others can't just go buy too at the moment, though if they're patient enough and play often enough they do come back around. I like getting cosmetic stuff and so I wouldn't know what to recommend otherwise for boxes and things.
